G50 Hydraulic Clutch Question?

Hello and good evening fellow Pelicans.

As some may be aware been slowly putting a project car, 1988 Carrera Targa, back together. Many lessons learned, most the hard way... .

Ok, have a seasoned Porsche mechanic reassembling my car. He is concerned that it, my 88 may never have been set up for the hydraulic clutch system.

Were any late G50 equipped 911's not set up with a hydraulic clutch system? ... and instead equipped with a cable set up?

Welcome guidance and feedback... .

Grazee... .
Frank

I have an 87 G50. Never heard of such a modification.

I would be very surprised if the factory created a one-off to reverse a significant upgrade like that. I've never heard of a G50 with a cable clutch.

Appreciate the collective response... .

My mechanic, as well as a retired Porsche service advisor will be sitting down tomorrow morning to discuss and then look over the car.

Thank you... .

Think of the other items which would need to be different: foot pedal set, wiring for switches, shifter, flywheel interface, etc...Putting a 915 into an '87+ car is not so simple; the question is "why"?

Copy all... .

A bit of explanation is in order -- car was completely gutted at time of purchase. It had served its previous owner as a parts car as he restored a fire damaged '85 Coupe. No fenders, no hood, no engine lid, interior shot, no gauges, brakes, virtually no wiring harness. But it was a roller with a title -- $3K... in early 2018... . So, I've been putting it together as a near blank canvas. I did acquire a low mileage G50 from Weekend Rides at a great price in 2019.

Wrong pedals were installed at some point, part of the problem... .

No doubt I could have purchased a complete running 911 SC or Carrera in 2018 for much less than the money I've put into the project BUT that would have taken all the fun out of it... . It has been fun at times and I've traveled across the US and Canada on scrounge missions, got to meet and know / become friends with some great people -- Porsche people tend to be that way...especially the hands on types....

Frank can you elaborate on why your mechanic thinks it was not set up as a hydraulic clutch ? In your pics I see a G50 shifter, shift rod, shift coupler and G50 style spring plates so I am curious why he thinks it was not set up for the hydraulics. Other than the pedal assy and hard lines through the tunnel (which are not visible in your pics) everything else appears to be there.

Great work so far on the car! zoomed in on the pedals in all the pics and without the CSI "ENHANCE" function I can't tell they are 915 or g50 pedals. The brake/clutch reservoir is def an 87+, so are the spring plates, dash top support and as mentioned above the g50 shift rod and coupler.

This is a fun guess who.

The random bar photo was also a lot of fun.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for the great comments and advice too.

I long ago had the wrong pedals installed, I had forgotten that -- car came without a pedal assembly. The wrong pedals threw off my mechanic... that and the VIN # around the gas tank area was hard to read, we kept getting back a 2001 911 with our collective efforts to read the VIN. Finally, called a local Porsche expert who in turn deciphered the numbers (J looked like an I for instance), so no doubt an '88 Carrera Targa.

Got the correct pedals on order with that all important clutch slave cylinder, progress... . As Imelda Marcos once said, "the journey of a thousand miles begins with a first step... ."

She also said, “They went into my closets looking for skeletons, but thank God all they found were shoes, beautiful shoes.”

Spent time in the Philippines while in the service, always loved Imelda... .

BTW, all that body work came to less than $6500 (parts & labor, although I provided some of the sheet metal) ... that's amazing nowadays for the work done and the tight schedule the fabricator, Mr. Mike Klapac worked on. Not cheap but not crazy expensive either... .
