Cincinnati Outlaw - This Escalated Quickly
I have started a couple threads on here already asking specific questions, but I figured I should go ahead and make a build thread, to keep the meat and potatoes in one place.
So I wanted an air-cooled 911 that I could drive while I did some minor mods and restoration work to it. I searched for months, and found one at a decent price, and traveled to pick it up. It is quite a hodge podge bastard child of a 911. It is not for the purist faint of heart for sure. The chassis is a 1968 912 with about 105,000 miles on it. The motor is out of a 1970 911t, 2.2 6 cylinder. The body is a mess of early 80's wide body stuff. The front fenders are full fiberglass and the rear has glass flares added. It's a nightmare, but I love it. Every time I look at it I love it more. Every time I drive it, I love it 10 times more. I had a 996 turbo before this, and I kick myself for not getting into an air cooled before now. So like i started off with, my intentions were to drive it while i did small mods and restoration stuff on it. But one of the big things it needs is floors front and rear, and possible pedal box, etc. So, I'm going to have to pull the entire interior to see what is needed. The car needs some body work on the rear fenders, and other places of course. But currently the rear fender flare-joint area is badly cracked on both sides. So bad that I am embarrassed to drive it. This leads me to thinking I ought to just go ahead and do a full tear down, and have the body work done and full repaint. That way I can reassemble and all will be good to go. Soooooo, here we go. Bare with me... this will be long and drawn out, lots of pics, etc. Hopefully I can help someone learn something in my massive over-my-head teardown and rebuild learning experience. Here it is as it sits right now... these shots were taken tonight. As soon as I post this message, teardown begins. The interior shots are old, but I wanted you all to see what I am starting with. Goal is to have the car back on the road by the end of summer. Impossible right? ![]() ![]() ![]()

Looks like you got a little more than you bargained for!? Whats the plan for the finished item? Take it back to long hood, narrow body, wide body? It's essentially a blank slate at this point so you're in the enviable position of making it whatever you want. Best of luck with the build. Hopefully will see it at one of the OH shows when I get back to the U.S.

I like the wipers parked on the right 68 and earlier and the pop out windows. It will never be an original unmolested car, so I say that is the green light to do as you please. How about a stock looking 912 with a 2.2 hiding underneath? Pick a great old Porsche color - or find the original - I doubt it was black - and have at it. Sell the updated stuff if you can to finance the longhood parts. Congrats, looking forward to updates

Carwash:
Welcome! Actually, the 912 is a pretty decent chassis to start with when doing a project like this, and there was a very good write-up in Excellence magazine a few issues back where someone did just that. I will see if I can find the issue and the publication number so you can get ahold of that particular article. I know there were some obstacles the fellow ran into, but after the job was done he loved the "ride and feel" of the car. Looking forward to seeing the progress here. Good luck.

I just love the gray and black on that car. The chrome headlight bezels are all wrong, IMO, but to each his own.
No, not in the carwash biz. My last name is Karwath, I've been called carwash since i was 4 years old. Not gonna shake it now. I own a custom powder coating business. should come in handy on this project.

I would sell this interior, for anyone interested.... I think I'm going to go with full race car interior... to hell with carpet, and sound deadening, and back seats, etc.
Cage and aluminum panels I think will be the way I go...

And here is how tonight ended... the floor has some issues and needs a full replacement. The rest of it is in quite decent shape. This sound deadening stuff is brutal, and sticky, and nasty, and hard to get off your hands...

Label, bag and document. That looks like fun. You were right about the floor. Are those three makeshift floor patch panels? Awful.
The gray euro 911 from the video is awesome. Except for the brakes? sounds like he needs some new pads or something. You going with some steel rear flares? Did it have wider wheels at one point? |
