Oil Pressure Sender Removal

Getting prepared to remove the oil pressure sender on an 82SC. It does not appear this model has the thru bolt on the mounting boss and therefore, I assume it's fine to use a 24mm crowsfoot and just bear down on it. The AC compressor and mounting bracket are off and I have plenty of room to work. Just read some horror stories about this procedure so I might be overly cautious. Bentley no help.

Picture Please……..

Walt,

Post a picture of your oil pressure sender unit to help you get better and accurate advises. I have not seen one without the thru bolt adaptor.

I was thinking it just looked like a flared adapter fitting for the oil line.

Do not do it on the engine. Clamp the mounting block in a vise and see how damn tight they are.

Walt,

The thru bolt is a 12-mm x 1.0 fitting bolted to the crankcase. You need to remove first the hydraulic tensioner oil line/s to be able to loosen this adapter bolt using a 17-mm socket. The spec for this bolt is only 26 ft-lb. Do not use a breaker bar for the removal. Use a torque wrench with 30 ft-lb setting and hope to get it loosen. Patience and do not force it. You don’t want to break your crankcase by applying excessive force. Keep us posted.

Except u shouldn’t use a torque wrench to unloosen fasteners.

Walt,

I misunderstood your post. Do not attempt to remove the pressure sender with the mounting base bolted to the motor. Remove the pressure sender and mounting base as a unit and separate it on the bench like John W. suggested. There were instances where people caused damage on their crankcase while removing the pressure sender unit while it was installed on the motor.

While it is rare, it did happen a few times. So don’t be another unsuspecting victim. Remove the thru bolt and you will be fine.

I did this on my 82SC last year without any issues. I removed the sensor top first but had to buy an adjustable thin wrench. I had no problem removing the thru bolt.

Finished, came out quite easily. I was incorrectly thinking the pass thru bolt design was found on the later 3.2. Thanks and glad I asked first.

I removed mine complete with the through bolt , then replaced it on the vice , then reinstall. I can see bending the through bolt if done incorrectly

You can also rip the threads out of the case and worst case, break a chunk off. Mag cases especially. There was a thread here a few years ago where a guy actually "restored" that broken section with JB weld. I wonder how long that lasted.
