Sweet Transplant

I suppose I could have also called my new build “Covid Project” but “Sweet Transplant” will be more appropriate and will become evident as this project evolves.
After many seasons enjoying driving and tinkering with the RST hot rod I was getting anxious for one last project before I was too long in the tooth.

I have always wanted a high revving small displacement hot rod-God only knows why as the RST is such a kick-butt ride. Then, in the summer of 2020, a friend one mine who runs an automotive repair shop “invited” me to come and see his new acquisition and toss around some ideas for a build. Long story short, this 1971 911T was dropped off at his shop after having been rejected for restoration by one of the Porsche dealerships in Toronto. The customer wanted a full restoration starting with a complete engine rebuild which was the only task completed. Then one thing did NOT lead to another, the project was abandoned with the customer handing over the keys.
So I find myself at my friend’s personal garage occupied by a gorgeous 996 Turbo, a ‘72 911 in stalled restoration mode, and, this, hmm, ‘71……and, my friend’s wife emphatically indicating that she wants the ‘71 gone before winter to make room for her Mercedes SUV.
Clearly, the ‘71 needed allot of work and during the ensuing few months conversation went back and forth, the snow flurries were more frequent and with it the motivation to dispose the car rather than restoring it. So, a deal was made and the Ugly Duck, as I had already nicknamed it, was flat-bedded to my garage.

I think that the Ugly Duck has spent much of its life as a project in progress-from several hundred pounds of ‘80’s stereo equipment, modded to a short hood with ugly badly fitted turbo flares, lots of rust repair, racing seats so narrow that my 14 year old grandson had trouble getting in and out of and with just a 2.2 with GOLD coloured Webers. Ugh! What was I thinking!?!?!

^^^Can anybody educate me as to what “ROZ” means?

^^^Oh, Wow!

^^^Just had to take this one.

^^^The stereo…must have been worth lots at one time.

^^^Rear subwoofer speakers box 10x28x10 deep cut right into the engine compartment. I didn’t take picks of the massive speakers in the doors, and under dash. Massive amount of thick speaker wiring.

^^^^This one sold me…GOLD Webers!

^^^A few wacks at the speaker box with a 2x4 extension and sledge hammer to loosen the 10 lbs. of scilicone used to hold the box…t’was such a pleasure.

I ain’t finished yet!
Cheers,
Johan

I do!!! It pleases me to no end that one little bit of Project Heavy Metal gets to stay in the Pelican Family.

Fitting, too, since the mini-duck from REVNGE is on the Rot Rod, I can see it out the front window as I type this!

So with the car completely dismantled, I trailered it to my body shop of choice, Bromley Automotive, just outside Orillia.

Now the fun begins.

The Candidate

All the undercoating was removed which indicated previous major repairs- so very well done and other a real hack job.
Major rust throughout the inner rear fenders and rocker panels. Surprisingly, the floor, rear hump and parcel shelf were in very good shape. Front slam panel and frunk floor brace were not up to par and were removed.
Pretty rough going for the Ugly Duck and me.

The Transplant

At this point i brought out my secret weapon….the remains of my ‘86 which I crashed at Mosport back in 2009 and which had been laying out in the pasture for the past 6 or 7 years.

It may not look like much, but it’s galvanized with inner rear fenders, rockers and heating tubes in tact.

The Transplant…..

To be continued……

I can't imagine the cost of this body work, but, wow, I bet it looks amazing when done. I am getting ready for a reimagine but not to this level.

I did a double take as well - That's rear defrost, I always thought for some reason that was a SWB thing only.

Johan you are certainly giving us an anatomy lesson in pictures!!!

The insulated portion going forward through the rocker is for cabin heat. If I’m not mistaken, the rear portion is for engine warm-up on the ‘86 3.2 motor. Can’t remember the 3.2 setup. Am I right?

Final Chasis Restoration

Here are a few more pics of the restoration before we get into mods.

I bought a brand new longhood from a Canadian Porsche dealer for less than a used one advertised on Pelican buy-sell thread.
Made sure that the headlights mated properly with the used longhood fenders. New slam panel and accessories from our friends at Restoration Design.

Larger outside mirrors fitted as I have found that the smaller ones fitted on the RST are somewhat deficient.

Part of the slam panel kit. Everything fitted really well.

New rear outer narrow body fenders purchased from a Porsche dealership in Canada for much less than anywhere in the U.S. Apparently they were overstocked at the Toronto warehouse hence the deal.

Rear suspension bracing from Rebel Racing

Stitching inside portion of rear fender from the donor chassis, RVENGE.
Filled in the infamous boom box cavity using a section from RVENGE.

This is probably the only section not requiring restoration.

Cheers,
Johan

Hmmm... I don't think so, but maybe it's a remnant from some other model year. My 85 doesn't have that and I don't think my 87 did either? I know my 78 didn't for sure. Interesting.

Great updates and photos! It looks so easy when you just post the highlights, doesn't it? Summarizing hundreds of hours of parts procurement and research and tens of thousands of dollars, into a few pics!!!

Great Project!

!
I wonder if it’s a remnant from the ‘71. I can’t remember what we did at this specific point. Maybe somebody can shed new light on this.
