Gas Smell - Cracked Expansion Tank

I have been chasing down a persistent gas smell in the cabin of my '84. Thought it might be the tank to fuel pump hose but that looked dry. Changed the hoses in the frunk that attach to the expansion tank but still no luck. Then, running out of options, I decided to pull out the expansion tank and flipped it over. It was cracked in several places -- not what I was expecting to see. Anyway, for those dealing with gas smell issues, you may want to give your expansion tank a close look.

I just thought smelling gas was a fixture of these cars?

Ditto for me. I have a 1973T CIS car, and the expansion tank was up under the windshield on the driver's side. A real PITA to get to, as I had to remove the left hood hinge to get at it, and pull out the oil gauge to get access from that side. It had several cracks, that I sealed up with silicone sealer. We'll see how long that lasts...

So I am not alone, nor imagining this.
84 Carrera 3.2 Cabriolet

Where are these tanks located?

I’m probably going to open a can of worms and replace all rubber hoses in the front, along with any tanks that need it.

It’s a smell that is not getting better, and seems to be when running, with a fresh top off of fuel.

As far as I know, on the 3.2 Carrera, there are two plastic expansion tanks that are part of the fuel system (not including the carbon canister). One is in the front left wheel well sitting directly above the windshield washer reservoir. The other is located in the frunk. My gas smell was originating from the tank in the frunk, which was cracked on the underside. Once I replaced this tank, the gas smell was gone. I also replaced the rubber hoses attached to this tank for good measure.
