Parking Brake Rebuild on 1985 911?

Hello, I have a rear wheel squeak on my 1985 911 that I think I’ve traced to the parking brake pads. Actually, I believe a spring has broken in the parking brake set up.

I plan to open things up and check and, if I’m right, replace a spring (or two). I’ll obviously have to reset the parking brake, etc.

Is this a good “while you’re in there” project? Should I look to replace the parking brake pads and other bits? I’m confident that what’s there is original.

Are the parking brake pads at all four corners or only on the two rear wheels?

Thanks for your thoughts/comments.

LS

There are no pads. There are shoes in the rear drums which can be adjusted.

Thank you.

So only shoes on the rear drums. I’ll look to make sure I have a few of the springs available since I think that’s the parts that I heard break followed by the squeaking.

Thanks again.

The car has disc brakes not drum brakes. The shoes are actually behind the rotor the "drum" is built into the rotor. The shoes usually last forever, but there are several other moving parts not just springs. They make a hardware kit that comes with all of the moving parts but it is about $200 not sure if you want to go that deep.

Thanks, Mike.

What I heard “pop” sounded like a spring, but I don’t want to open this up and find I don’t have right parts. Thank you for the heads-up on the kit. As much as I don’t want to spend $200 for no reason, I’d rather have the rights parts on-hand.

Are you sure that the squeak is not the inside of the wheel rubbing on the hard brake line?
That is what mine was. I actually did a r&r in the pits at Summit Point - then I noticed a shiny spot on the inside of the wheel.

I’ve had the wheel off and inspected everything, but I’ll double check.

Thank you for the suggestion.
