The Ultimate Early Car??

A subjective question of course. But if subtle hotrodding is your thing, this is the car. A 70S restored/modified by the 901 Shop in Florida. The workmanship and detail is unreal. 2.2S twin-plug motor, R wheels front & back, modifed suspension, etc., etc. Heard thru the 'grapevine' that this project exceeded $100K. Photos truly do not do it justice.

And finally, a simple solution to the air cleaner wing nuts spinning off (I've lost 2 or 3 of them!!) - small holes drilled thru the wings and a spring to hold them in place:

That car is sick. Does the owner drive it?

It's been complete for about a year, but I don't think it gets driven much at all. They were using it to anchor the tent down all weekend ......

"Sick"??? My comment as I walked away after staring at it for 30 minutes and talking to the 901 Shop guys was "that's disgusting".

it is cool and amazing, but just like the RSA w/33 miles...seems sad on some level. I suppose there is a place for concours cars to be trailered from event to event so they can be drooled over, but what does the *car* really want?

And what about the children? Won't somebody think about the children?!?

I wish I had a ton of money - I'd buy that car and do donuts in the parking lot - you can tell that car wants that - come on boy, fetch!

Somehow, I managed to not shoot the interior??!! Heck, it took me 30 minutes just to look at the engine compartment ..... He did have some aftermarket race seats that I didn't care for. Apparently, the owner is a bit large and wasn't comfortable in the factory-type race seats. I would have opted for some R/RSR style seats myself. Nonetheless, the interior was as immaculate as the rest of the car. -- Curt

That front hood compartment looks like an operating room. I cant believe that hooked the tent to the R wheels!!

You think he'd want to paint the chrome around the windows? I told the other guy it would come off (snicker).

I like others better (mine is a good start, except the attention to detail sucks. If I had another $65k to spend though...).

I think the RGruppe 912 takes the cake, personally. You know the one - with the 3.5 slide injection. It just needs some exterior toning down (for my taste).

$100K won't get you an L.A. house, but it's a helluva down.

It's a very nice car, but I don't see the $100k; not when you can buy original early "S"s in showroom condition for 1/2 the price or less. To each their own I guess, if you told me that the investment was really $40k, I might understand.

Denis, supposedly, it was $8k for the car, $50k for the bodywork and $50k for the engine/mechanicals. Of course, there's a zero possibility of recouping that amount. But this had to be a situation where recouping the money wasn't a consideration. It was simply building the car the owner wanted and sending the bill on a time & materials basis.

How did it get to $100k?? It's the detail work. An example was the oil catch can for the breather hose. Don't have a photo but it was all hand fabricated including some ingenious brackets. I figured it probably took a guy (or guys) at the shop a couple of days just to design, fabricate, and install that piece - cha-ching!!! -- Curt

I don't know about the car ..it is great, but $100K ...I don't think so. I WOULD however like the cool air filters for the MFI. I have asked many times about K & N type filters for MFI and found nothing. So where did he get these?

I had a great battle (on track) with these guys at the GT Challenge a few weeks ago. Their cars are prepared very well. I went buy to talk to the driver and BS a bit, they just had some amazing cars there. Prepared to the limit and very clean!

I really like the fiberglass replacement of the engine tin. Is this part of a kit? I've seen the uncolored shrouds (they rock!) in GT Racing's book but don't remember the rest of the pieces.

Price? Well, I know that no one would ever give me the $$ for what I have in my car at resale either. No where close to $100k, but I can see how it would happen, easily. Especially if you are paying someone else to do the work.
