Is it ok to Buy New Rear Tires and keep the Old Fronts Ones?

Hi all,

I feel like I should know the answer to this, but as I thought about it, I wasn't too sure...

The rear tires on my daily driver are nearly bald, but the fronts are in pretty good shape.

Is it okay to replace the rears without replacing the fronts?

I'm getting rid of this particular car in the next 18 months or so, so I don't think I'll have it by the time the fronts wear down.

Yes it is, On 911s, the rears will wear out twicw as fast as the fronts.

Stick with the same tire though, if possible. I have mismatched tires front/rear on my SC and the car is al over the place in the wet.

If you stick with the same brand of tire it helps. I have miss-matched tires front to rear but same brand (Bridgestone) on the rear and its fine.

Get more HP and you will get used to wearing the rears out sooner!

Yes, no problem at all.

I decided to sell my two fronts (online) and buy four new tires. I wasn't really impressed by the tire choice of the PO.

Yes, you can do it. I had Dunlop Sport 9000's on the rear and old Bridgestones on the front last fall. When I replaced the fronts with Dunlop Sport 9000's this spring, the ride improved (especially high speed cornering) significantly!

No. You should replace all four at the same time. Thankfully, though, I'm around to help out: I'll recycle your front tires for you for a very low fee of $10 per tire. Just send the tires and the money to me, and I'll recycle them.

As stated, keep the same model of tire, or at least as close as you can get.

I just went through this...and have had checkered results.
My old fronts are regular Bridgestone SO-2's. Needed rears and the "best" available tire ( today), as confirmed by the Bridgestone Tech I spoke to...was an N3 spec SO-2. Turns out the sidewall construction is a bit different, but it was the best match he could find with the sidewall/ date info I provided him that copied from the fronts.

Result? ....diabolocal handling ( lots of squirm and mini-yaw effects when making lane changes). I've got 700 miles on the rears and they're finally settling down to near-normal feeling. About 90-95% there. I'm going to Watkins Glen next week for a DE...heaven help me.
