How do you lock the keys in an SC?
 

Got the latest issue of Roundel today and one of the columnists mentions locking his keys in his '82 SC, noting that the owner's manual says this is impossible. I thought so as well - the driver's door doesn't lock without the darn key, and I've often been a little annoyed when I'm in a hurry that I have to pause and lock the door after I'm outside. (Though every time I lock the keys in the RR, I'm a little less annoyed :)). Is it possible to accidentally lock the driver's door?

Procedure for locking keys in car: Exit driver's door and lock door with key. Later decide you want to look at something stored in the glovebox (jockeybox). Open passenger door, sit in passenger seat and close door. Decide you want to listen to the radio while you are reading the owner's manual, maintenance log, etc. Reach under steering wheel and put keys in ignition switch and turn on radio. Realize you are late for something outside, quickly turn off the radio, hop out of the car and lock door by reflex without thinking. Next realizing how angry you'd be if you hadn't secretly wired a spare key somewhere under the car. :D Jim

It happens whenever you go back to the car to look for something.
You want to check the glovebox first, so you go in thru the passenger side.
So that you can use both hands (to rifle thru stuff) you set the keys on the seat. . .

Well, if you really wanted to, you could do it. Lock the driver's door with the key, walk around to the passengers door, throw the keys inside, push the button and slam the door. Of course, like I said, you'd REALLY have to want to.

I came this l l close to locking my keys in the front trunk. At a rest stop. In the middle of the night. With my cell phone battery dead. And a bad hangover.

I once stopped in the middle of nowhere (somewhere outside of Sprague, Washington) on a hot summer day, during a long trip, in order to retrieve sandals for my passenger/wife. The car was a '73 Pontiac LeMans and the sandals were in the trunk. Yep, you guessed it. Slammed the trunk closed with the keys on top of the suitcase (in the trunk). It took a while to retrive those keys. By the time we finally got underway again, the rear deck was ready for speakers.

Mmmmm, Viking burgers.

Best damn hamburgers anywhere.

Come to think of it, I've ripped out the back seats of a couple of rental cars to retrieve my keys from the trunk.

Reminds me of my favorite cheesy option/feature on an American car: those "combo locks" on the outside of Ford/Lincoln/Mercury cars. Brilliant they are. :cool:

I carry one of those plastic credit card key thingies, just for that reason.

I keep an extra key jammed inside the plastic jack-hole cover on the driver's side. 77's are not idiot proof.

I've managed the locked driver side, glove box fumble, radio on lock-out myself but was fortunate to be washing the car in the driveway.

Well, I guess I can't talk: the police came to the apartment at 1 a.m. and asked if I owned a red car. "Yep, a 1983 Guards Red 911." "So these are your keys then? They were still in the door of the car." Gulp.

It is real easy. Stop to get gas, leave your wife and keys in the car. Go inside to pay, wife decides she has to go to the bathroom. She locks the drivers door, locks her passenger door, and leaves the keys in the ignition.
Greatest invention is General Motors On Star. Lock your keys in the car, which is real easy to do in a Yukon XL, and all you do is call On Star. They remotely unlock the car.

You guys know that you can keep the door locked closing it with the trigger pulled. Atleast on mine.SmileWavy

Once locked MY keys in.....took me 20 minutes to get my blonde girl friend out....

Assuming the keys are locked in, how easy is it to get in without using the spare keys?

Pretty easy if you use a big rock.

Apparently, in my absentminded haze of the last few days, I left the spare keys in the glove compartment. Didn't need them at the time as I had the main set in the ignition and was enjoying a spirited drive.

Afterwhich, I went and lost the original keys!:(
I have torn apart my house and office to no avail. Now I just have to get in the car!
