Bumperette restoration
Anyone ever paint their rear bumper guards? Mine have some nicks in them and I want to restore them. If anyone has, is there a rattle can paint that matches the factory finish? This is for my SC.
Thanks! |

Impact bumpers, the thin bumper strips and accordions or everything?
I don’t think rattle can would be the best approach even fit you could get a decent color match, single stage or metallics. Automotive paints for bumpers need a certain ratio amount of additive called ‘Flex’ mixed into it to give it that resilience to not only impact but temperature expansion/contraction. Without adding flex, multiple paint coats to achieve color will crack. Secondly, the matte black of the rubber/vinyl hide a lot of imperfections ordinarily not repairable. I don’t think simply painting them will yield a uniform, solid look. That old rubber compound is wavy, distorted and grainy. iThere are quite a number of specialty paint suppliers that will come darn close to matching. Not sure if they have Flex already added to these rattle cans. Try masking off the area and go at it with a store bought rattle color match can just to see the effects before committing to a proper body shop spray method. And at that rate, I’d remove the bumperettes, fill the holes and eliminate them altogether for a sleek look. |

I haven't tried this, but have seen Plasti-dip used. Worth trying on an unseen part first.
