torqueing sc crank pulley nut
any one know if theres a special tool to hold the crank /balancer pulley while torqueing the bolt to 100+ lbs. the pully has no holes or anything to hold it. 79sc 3.0l . i m thinkin air impact to get it off. i was reading old forums that cautioned against using flywheel lock because the crank will distort so minor that it creates a vibration. i f thats the case there has to be a tool , im guessing i can make one w a v belt . appreciate any input. thnx

The crank will not distort. That sucker is way thicker and stronger than the wrench you use to apply torque to the nut.

I was torquing Durloc pulley bolts on performance engines to 150 ft lbs. Tool, I think was originally used for power steering sprocket on 964. Sometimes pulley holes need to be tuned up a little to fit.

Well the pulley couldn't handle that much torque without deforming. Is the trans off? Just use a wrench like this;

I never torque mine. Just do it up 'tight'. Never had an issue in 20+ yrs - on road and track. I seriously doubt I am anywhere near 50+ ft/lbs. I use the pulley tool.

so nobody out there has heard anything about tweakin the crank? i m new to these engines but work on a lot small eng stuff dont ever wanna put load where it doesnt need to be cause they re delicate. first thing i thought was flywheel stay( block of wood between the pressure plate bolt n eng yoke) , but as usual i overthought and looked it up n sure as s#$t there all kinds of forums claiming lots of guru 6 builders caution about runnin tension thru the crank like that. not giving details about type of crank or how much torque but makes me want more input. thnx for input everybody

You must be looking at Fakebook or Reddit groups. They are wrong.
I won't trot out the math here, so just consider this: The force the piston puts down on the crank pins is TONS. Yeah, thousands of pounds. That's WAY more torque than you can get on the nut on the end of the crank using whatever wrenches/wedges/locks you can lay your hands on. And the pistons hit the crank with that force thousands of times a minute, for thousands of hours. The cranks don't twist. Capische?

How do you think the crank survives the flywheel bolts being torqued.?
Then there is the ring gear lock for undoing tough nuts and flywheel bolts. Not to mention what Pete Kz has mentioned. You are over thinking it. 100% Alan

alan , theres no twisting force through the length of the crank when doing flywheel bolts
