Raise external oil cooler opening temp

I live in a cooler part of the world and my car runs pretty cold - it rarely goes above 140.

If it's really hot out in stop and go it'll get close to 200, and the car runs WAY BETTER at 200 than any other temp, so I'm wondering if I can delay the opening of the external cooler so I get the engine to run at 200 more often.

Jeremy,

Test your auxiliary thermostat in an heated oil or water bath. The thermostat is NORMALLY CLOSED below 185°F and will gradually open until it is fully wide open at around 200°F. This is the normal operating condition.

I suspect that your auxiliary thermostat is prematurely open and causing you to have a long time to get to operating temperature. Without testing your thermostat, it would be difficult to assess the root cause of your problem.

Place the thermostat in a heated oil or water bath and observe the slide valve opening change from fully CLOSED to wide OPEN. The most common problem is a stuck valve at closed position to cause overheating. Yours could be the opposite.

Easy way to tell if your external cooler is getting oil flow below 180 deg - put your hand on it when the oil temp is under 150 on the gauge. The external cooler should be cool at that temp. If it’s warm, the thermostat is opening prematurely or stuck open.

There is an oil cooler on the back of the engine, with a thermostat that is part of the "triangle of death." There is also the external thermostat in the right wheel well that controls oil coming back from the cooler in the front of the car.

It sounds to me like your triangle of death thermostat is stuck open (which I think is how they are designed to fail). Mine was.

I doubt that engine is happy to rev out at 140°F oil temps.
