Help with Color Code 638-9-2
This was said to be original paint and Color for a 1977 Turbo Carrera.
I dont usually have problems finding info. It does not seem to be a special order option for 1977. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Louiehttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1690577531.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1690577531.jpg |
This could be a Paint To Sample Option and not a Porsche color (Rennbow.org), The tag is however stamped with the actual color of particular paint code and that “638” can correspond to any color by any car manufacturer. Porsche PTS would use any color a customer would request, said to have even mixing their own formulas to match some obscure hue.
On the tag, the “2” indicates Glasurit paint. So try researching Glasurit/BASF. The only way to ascertain if it’s a Paint To Sample option color is through Porsche, on my COA it’s indicated as 099, or 99 and some later years had L999 on decals, but the door frame tag is always the actual paint code as a reference to repair/repaint. Notwithstanding is that these tags can be replaced with reproductions and stamped accordingly. Usually obvious by the way the rivets are set, but yours look original including the typeface of the numbers, another giveaway to repros. |
Update
Nathan at C&C looked it up foe me.
Dove Grey Book says it was from a Lincoln Mark IV Paint to Sample Cheers, Louie |
Louie, congratulations, according to Ryan Snodgrass - your car is one-of-one for all the 3.0 liter turbos, 75-77.
The '9' indicates it was painted in the factory, vs Karossiewerk Weinsburg facility; in which case, it would be stamped '8'. Are the wheels 15" or 16" ? Did you add the H-4's Bill K |
Those def are 16" Fuchs. Most likly 7 x 16 and 8 x 16 rear.
That is a special car any history on it etc ? Good luck and enjoy. |
Input
Thank you all for your input.
Unfortunately its my brothers new car and not mine. I also thinks it was a tremendous score. He is now the 3rd owner. All books, records and dealer invoice were included. The car is near 100k miles with a documnted rebuild at 75k. The fuchs are 16x7 & 8. Originally delivered in San Francisco and has lived its life in California. The H4's were added along with an upgraded turbo, otherwise pretty stock. Currently going through a extreme detail and refresh. She will be out at event's in the L.A. area soon. Cheers, Louie |
Louie, a great Christmas gift for your brother would be the Turbo 3.0 book! ;)

Update...
After a few subtle mods and wheel upgrade, she is looking pretty nice.
Don't worry, everything that has been done is reversible. The original wheels have been put away. What do you guys think of the new look? Cheers, Louie http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1698082447.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1698082447.jpg |
Updated Info
FYI...
This car came with service records and original window sticker, and a tool kit. The fuchs are indeed 16x7 & 8. Additional rear Euro bumper with reflectors have been added since the last photo was taken. I really hope he keeps it, but I worry that he may get an outrages offer like he did on the last 5 cars I helped him build. Its hard being a big brother. Cheers, Louie |
I like it.
