What are you talking about? The trombone cooler, as it's generally called, which is simply a couple of u-shaped coils of bronze tubing that look roughly like a trombone slide? They weren't particularly effective, and many of us have replaced them with 28 (or more) tube radiator-type coolers. If you're installing a front-fender oil cooler where there isn't curently one, I wouldn't bother installing a trombone cooler; the factory gave up on them (at least for American driving conditions) pretty quickly. Go for a later radiator-type cooler.

no I believe his is talking about that "finned" unit that replaces the "S" shaped rubber hose between the tank and the engine mtd oil cooler

I do not have any hands on experience with that cooler but I am thinking about installing one,I currently have a Mocal unit with a manually operated fan that works fine, but it is so hot in Orlando that I am thinking about adding one of these. As long as the I.D. of the unit is sufficient to not restrict the oil flow I would think the added finned surface area would help, its a matter of how much will it help.

The I.D. is a little less than 3" almost triple the size of the hose. You will see the big differance in highway driving because of the airflow being greater. It is called a COMPACT COOLER.

Yes, I was tlaking about the compact cooler. My 75 911s has no set up for the front cooler and i was looking for a low cost solution. i guess a heat shield and a compact cooler can do the job for the highway, but it is the traffic that i am worried about. Philadelphia gets pretty hot in the summer.

It seems to me that in town during the summer, you're going to find a front cooler with fan as the best solution. It depends how hot you're running now.
On hot days in traffic, I was seeing 230º-240º. I've got the engine out of the 73E for cleaning of the oil cooler, the cylinder fins, and modifying the air deflectors (baffles) to the way Porsche started making them in '77. I hope this effort will translate into cooler oil temps. After the engine goes back in (Saturday!), I'll need to make sure the car is well tuned and then I'll see how hot my oil temps get. If they still get too high, I'm going to add an external cooler. I have the hard oil lines and a trombone (loop) cooler, but still need a thermostat and the fittings to secure the oil lines to the car. I have been toying with the idea of the compact cooler, too.
