'89 Anniversary Car horn wire routing
OK, this one has me scratching my head again.
By way of background, this is an ’89 Anniversary coupe. As I understand, a special steering wheel is part of that package and is different from most other wheels in this year. (See pic below.) There is a little half-moon nylon clip with a spring slider/contactor (see pic below) on the face of it attached in the plastic steering column “cowl” that houses the various switches (turn signal, wiper, cruise). There’s a white/brown ground wire that comes up from the switch group on the steering column and attaches to the half-moon connector, which would normally run against a metal ring on the steering wheel, connecting ground to the wheel. Pressing the horn button completes the ground circuit and toots the fancy two-tone horn. When I got this car, it had a little Momo wheel installed (but I did get the original wheel in a box). Am getting ready to sell it, so am putting it back to original Anniversary configuration in all respects (which includes putting the original steering wheel back in). The Momo wheel had a metal frame that rode on the half-moon contactor, as I presume a stock wheel would also. HOWEVER, the Anniversary cars came with this special wheel that did not have any metal ring on the back (the surface that faces toward the front of the car). If you install the half-moon contactor on the column, it would only rub on the rubber surface of the steering wheel until it put a hole in it, and would do nothing electrically. (Pic shows where the contactor would rub on the rubber back of the steering wheel.) SOOOO, I can’t see how we get that ground wire to the steering wheel so the horn “button” can complete the ground circuit. The entire center pad of the steering wheel is the horn button, and there’s a little spade connector on the back side of the pad. Connecting ground to that connector allows the horn button to complete the circuit (through several contactors on the back of the pad). It seems there must be a wire that connects to the white/brown wire (that used to hook to the half-moon) and then runs out to the connector on the horn button pad. But as I say, I can’t see how one would route that wire so it wasn’t wrapping around the steering column. And maybe with only like 3 turns lock-to-lock that’s OK, but never seen that done on anything before. The manual doesn’t seem to cover this (or at least not as far as I can find), presumably because this wheel may have been used on so few cars? So, as I say, scratching my head here. Anybody out there got an Anniversary car (or any car with this steering wheel) and know how this is supposed to be hooked up?? Thanks in advance, once again, for your help. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thank you. I had pretty much concluded there must be a missing part. Guess they didn't bother to put ALL the original parts in the box. I assume that screws to the back of the wheel and is metallic so the "half-moon" conductor rides on it? Great. Now my challenge will be breaking it to my wife that I just need to send ANOTHER $150 to Pelican Parts! :-)

Most of the time that piece can be transferred from one steering wheel hub to another; is it not on the back of the Momo wheel?
The tab that extends from the ring is what cancels the turn signals when the wheel returns to center. |
