Fuel tank refinishing

What is the correct product to paint the fuel tank on a 3.2 Carrera? My Targa was leaking fuel at the cork gasket and the paint it peeling up. I’ve got it at the bodyshop to address some corrosion in the trunk floor and I think I’ll address the tank while it’s there. Are the stickers for the tank readily available? Thanks!

You can get new stickers from CarBone in Poland.

Color is debatable. I think the consensus is that it should be some shade of gray. The brown/tan of most older tanks was not the original color. It aged.

See this thread: https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/942272-gas-tank-coating.html

I used Rustoleum Smoke Gray, with a brush. Looks great. Maybe a litttle too dark, but good enough for me.

Thanks Mark! Is that underbody “Schutz” that gives it the texture, and then you painted over it?

I recently bought tint to match Upol bed liner from Amazon. About $150 for a gallon and it comes with a spray gun. Then I pulled off a piece of original undercoating, cleaned it with degreaser, took it to a paint shop and had them match a gallon of oil based primer to my swatch. I mixed up the two part Upol and added some of my color matched primer. About 1 part primer to 4 parts Upol. The color match was dead on. The texture of the Upol is a little different but very close to the factory undercoating. The color matched primer came from Sherwin Williams. It was about $50

I didn't replace the schutz. There were a few places where I had to sand away the schutz to clean up some rust spots. Then I hit those areas with pickup truck bed liner from a can, followed by the Rustoleum. You can see these areas in the photos I posted in the thread I linked.

It's not perfect, but this isn't a concours car and probably the only person that would notice besides myself would be a concours judge.

Here are some photos of my fuel tank after painting with the Smoke Gray. The bed liner product didn't work as well as I had hoped. Even after multiple coats it was still too thin. I went with it anyway.

I just painted mine with a spray paint color from Home Depot. I used the tank hold-down brackets as the color I thought would be correct. As others have stated, there's a debate over the correct color. It's not perfect, but close enough for me.

Wurth Stone Guard. They sell it in rattle cans and also for the schutz gun. I used the rattle cans and it came out great. Standard automotive paint over that. FWIW, it’s usually better and cheaper to replace the tank instead of refinishing. The newer Dansk model with filter works great.
