Rocker Repair 82 Targa
Hi All. I am finally getting to the body work on my SC that had an engine fire. The car started life in Chicago, so there are a few rust spots. I have dealt with most of them and now ready for the passenger side rocker. There is only the one spot, but it does go into the kidney bowl.
![]() My question is how to handle this. Can i just cut and replace pieces, or should I replace bigger pieces. I'm thinking I will just start cutting our the rust area and try to replace bits. Thank you, -Dave

If you do a search on here you will find plenty of pictures and commentary on how best to approach this. It is normal to remove a fairly big piece of the outer wing to allow proper access to repair or replace the kidney bowl, which is available as a repair panel

That's pretty bad. Check the other side of the car and all around. With that much rust, you almost certainly have more elsewhere. No point in just fixing one spot, only to have it pop out somewhere else.

Surprisingly, there are not that many rust areas. Just a few where dirt/junk collected and ate it away. I have already repaired the two areas above the front bumper shock. The other rocker appears to be OK. Driver side door latch is gone so that is next.
I have been reading the threads on rocker repair. Most seem to be on early cars with pretty severe damage along the entire rocker. Thanks for the input. I will do a deeper check on the drivers side. -Dave

My 81 SC had rust on the suspension pan which I cut out and replaced. My 66 912 has rust in the same area only worse so I bought new inner and outer longitudinals and a floor pan. In your case I would just trim out that area where there is rust to gain a better visual. If the rust is just confined to that hole I would do a patch on the inner then on the outer.

I did some grinding and cutting. I believe I am now down to all good metal.
![]() There is a slight amount of surface rust on the kidney spot weld area that I could not get with the grinder but all else looks good. How did they put on the outer rocker? It appears that the inner was installed then covered with a layer of the stuff used on the lower section of the outer rocker. Then the outer was put on over the top. I see a layer of that thick stuff between the panels. Thanks, -Dave
