I’d have to agree that the rack being off center is a static thing, it wouldn’t cause a pull. But if it’s foxed hallelujah.
|
i don’t think so safe. i’m not an expert but given the evidence i pointed out, wheel rub mark inside right wheel well and fact that it took obviously more effort to turn the steering wheel to the left and the fact that my steering wheel was off set to the right by about 2 or 3 splines and i could no longer center it when removing and reinstalling indicated that the tie rods and rack were off a little…..how he missed this when test driving before giving the car back is another question but stuff happens. bummer as it cost me another month of not having the car. basically i missed the whole season but i still have a few nice days to test out the new suspension.
in any case, it’s driving perfect now so i don’t really care any more he has the alignment results in his phone and showed me each one but i dont have a copy i can get them but dont see the point now as everything seems setup correctly. it definitely was not the usual culprits …tires or brakes and none of the parts were defective |

the way he explained it was, the rack being off just a little put more pressure on the teeth on one side making the wheels want to turn to the right…toward the path of least resistance….and making the steering wheel need more effort to turn left. in a garage full of porsche race cars being worked on by him, i took his word for it and just thanked him for getting it right.
please note i also may be misinterpreting his explanation slightly due to my own limitations in understanding alignment and steering components but the above is essential what my ears heard him say he admitted that my pointing out the rub mark and harder effort required to turn left made a light bulb go off…so whatever that means to you take it for what ever it is the entire 3 month ordeal was stressful and irritating so i’m putting it behind me and moving on. and no, there was no additional charge for taking the front bits off and starting over which he did just to double check torsion bars etc…i also got a free bump steer kit out of it so it’s all good |
Well hey, sounds like a good dude then, even if he goofed. I just can't imagine how the rack would be out of position.

Its a rack and pinion steering, going straight it's not affecting anything. You would just have the gears a little offset, which it how many cars comes from factory. You would be able to steer it a little further one way than the other. But its fixed, that's good! |
I agree with Safe and David. The rack only bolts in one way, and the left/right pressures on the rack are equal if the car is going straight ahead and the wheels are correctly aligned and corner balanced. But if it's fixed, go drive the snot out of it!

Could be something got lost in translation when he explained to me. But yea, it’s fixed so doesn’t matter now. Thanks all.

^^^yup, exactly ^^^. Offset rack in bushings mounts would only affect steering wheel centering, that's it. No question it's fixed now, but I would seriously question their honesty and ability race cars or not. With something like this, and I I've run into situations like these over the decades, is after you rule out tire pull, you put it back on the rack and check all the angles - it's that simple. The car will tell you what's wrong......
