New door handles, Old lock cylinders

I am replacing the door handles on my 1982 911SC with new ones and want to reuse the lock cylinders on the old handles.

What is the procedure for doing this?

Thanx,
Harry

Pretty straight forward once the original handle is removed from the door.

On the rear of the original door handle there is a "V" shaped piece of metal. That "V" shaped piece of metal is attached to the back of the original lock cylinder with a Philips head screw. Remove the Philips head screw and the "V" shaped piece of metal. Make note of the positioning on the back of the handle/lock cylinder of the "V" piece of shaped metal as you will need to position it the same on the new handle.

Now insert the original key in the original cylinder and twist the key while trying to slide the original lock cylinder out. The cylinder will then be removed.

Follow the same procedure for the new handle and lock cylinder. With the new lock cylinder removed from the new handle you will be able to insert the original lock assembly , with the key still inserted in the original lock cylinder, into the new handle.

Then attach the "V"metal piece in the same position as it was positioned in the original assembly. Then attach the Philips head screw and tighten

The new handle is ready to be re-installed.

just make sure you do not get later model door handles...the thumbles will be too short for them

Balloonmeister

have a look at the pictures here: How to re-key a door lock with pics

Pretty straightforward. This is for earlier cars, not sure if there are significant differences for yours.

I’d move the wafers over to the new cylinder, why use an old worn out cylinder when you have new ones.

As long as the cylinders are out take them in for new pins and a rebuild. I'm rekeying a building now to the tune of about 1K. Your bill won't be near that. I'm just doing it for tenant security in a major west coast city. You won't be able to use the Primus keys we use but it will be better. Keys and cylinders both wear.
