Black Paint Rejuvenating!

Had to share my latest project. I have a black '83 SC that had some paint that had been ignored but not abused. It had swirl marks over the entire car, and some decent scratches throughout that were very visible because of the black color. I recently purchased a Porter Cable polisher, and that along with a range of Meguiars products have renewed my finish! I ended up using three levels of Meguir's buffing, polishing and glaze and it came out pretty good. There are still a number of scratches that did not come out, but it looks a thousand times better that it did before. Was hesitant to use a buffer/polisher on the surface of the car, but it would have taken me weeks without it. As it was, I probably have 6 hours into it and I am not yet done (doing a panel at a time).

Vance,

My black Supra Turbo was in the same state. Don't want to burst your bubble, but during the polishing phase (and using a Porter Cable buffer) I was very happy with the rejuvenated gloss and finish.

Unfortunately, after the first few wash, it became dull again! Not as dull as before, but definitely disappointing. Hope yours was not neglected as mine was.

Polishing strips the first few layers. Unfortunately, having painted 2 cars myself, the book states that what makes paint shine is its 'moisture.' Paint needs to not lose all of this moisture.....thus, we supplement the lost moisture via waxing.

Once paint is oxidize, it almost always means that some dryness exist below the 'dead' first few layers.

Hope you have better luck than I did.

Based on info from carcareonline.com, I have been very successful with 3M Hand Glaze followed up with One Grand Blitz wax. The hand glaze gets rid of the petina and swirl marks often visible in a black car.

I agree with 3m hand glaze & one grand blitz

I've got an 87 black coupe. There are alot of road dings on the front but I use the 3m and blitz wax on the rest. I've tried the PS21 wax but I like the blitz better. I like the look and it lasts longer.

The 3m seems to work very well in getting the finish back. One thing though, on the front hood, it almost looks like paint has oil on it or uneven wax 'cause when you look at it in the sun, it looks like there is a deep streak...this isn't explaining it well but it's the best I can do. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. This isn't anywhere else on the car.

Here's a picture of the back.

Getting the swirls out is a lot of work. I use Zaino products, they are easy to use and smell awesome. No affiliation just a happy customer.

for swirls look at the z5 polish but you will need the z3 and z1 also http://www.zainostore.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc
