1980 SC Shifter knock noise
 

I just got my car out from summer nap and have a weird knocking sound in the shifter. Loudest in 1st and 3rd and occurs after I complete the shift, right as I take my hand off the shifter… a light snappy clunk.

If I put leverage on the shifter again to try and repeat the noise it won’t happen, it only happens after shifting into another gear.and then shifting back.

Trans feels normal and actual shifting is completely normal

Could be the front support bushing on the rod is gone. If youpull up the boot and shine a flashlight in theright side hole, you can see the ball socket bushing and the rod bushing.

i had this issue.
replacing the ball socket bushing was the cure.
