Quick CV Joint Install Question
 

I’m in the process of installing my new CV Joints onto the drive shafts. How do you know what side of the joint faces the drive shaft? The only thing I can see on the CV joint is a groove the goes around the outside about ¼” inward. Does the side with the groove face towards or away from the shaft?

The VW Bently Manual says the smaller side, but on the 930 the joint doesn’t have a smaller side.

did this project about 3 month ago and had the same question. Went back under the car and looked at the left-side CV still attached (did the shalfs one at a time). I can't be certain, but I think the grove was on the inside. Happy to go look tonight after work if helpful.

Could you please check? According to my old photos the grove is on the outside. I don't trust the PO, so I'm trying to verify if this is correct.

Which way did they go....
 

I appologize for bringing up an old topic, but I am also replacing cv joints and would like to know if the machined ring on the outside of the new joint should go towards the inside or outside of the car. The old joints don't have the machined ring so they are no help!
