shift knob removal
ok guys I fell pretty stupid on this one but I need a little help. I am changing my shift knob and I want to remove the old one. I do nopt want to destroy the old one! anyone know of an easy way to take it off? I put the whole thing in a vise and cranked on it but no action! ideas?

Assuming you've got the old style factory press-on knob like the one on my 84, the procedure is simple.
Take a 15mm wrench (I think that's the size), and protect the surfaces with duct tape. Slide it over the shift rod, and put it at the base of the knob. Then, take a good-sized hammer (I used a 2-1/2 lb. dead blow hammer) and pound the wrench to force the knob off the shaft. If yours is the same as on my 84, the knob is held in place by a crush sleeve that usually has to be replaced. Before you start pounding, however, be sure you have the old style press-on plastic knob. Newer and aftermarket knobs usually are held in place by a set screw. Good luck.

thanks scott! I tried it and it worked great.....sure beats trying to twist it off. I put on a nice momo aftermarket and I am very happy I get to keep the old one...undamaged! thanks again!
