Assuming you've got the old style factory press-on knob like the one on my 84, the procedure is simple.

Take a 15mm wrench (I think that's the size), and protect the surfaces with duct tape. Slide it over the shift rod, and put it at the base of the knob. Then, take a good-sized hammer (I used a 2-1/2 lb. dead blow hammer) and pound the wrench to force the knob off the shaft. If yours is the same as on my 84, the knob is held in place by a crush sleeve that usually has to be replaced.

Before you start pounding, however, be sure you have the old style press-on plastic knob. Newer and aftermarket knobs usually are held in place by a set screw.

Good luck.

That's what this board is all about. I'm glad it worked!

*****, I wish I'd heard that technique before I did mine... mashed it off with a mallet and a drift. Der.
