Well, all of this work was in anticipation of dropping the motor and installing the 915 I got in the purchase of this car. Then I had to fix the oil tank, then I found the #8 bearing leaking and then I found a leak at a case bolt that is threaded in to the case half. It won't tighten up. Agggg. The case has to be split. The weber's won't tune due to a rattling on the left side (I think it's the throttle shaft).

The motor looks fantastic but it leaks and can not be tuned. None of this was my doing. So some decisions need to be made. There is good and there is cheap and my graph doesn't have those two lines intersecting.

Option 1 send the case out and wait. Send the carbs out and wait. BTW I got a reservation for the carbs to be restored. I am free to ship them out in April 2025, pending everything from now till next year working out perfectly for the carburetor restorer.

Option 2 buy a case and a new set of carb's. Possibly down the road sell my 2.7 case to someone and the carb's I have that need love. There has to be some value in both.

When I saw the motor was out, this was not what I was expecting.
(I was honestly thinking it was out for deep cleaning.)

Chris, I had this leak at the rear main seal that I figured would be taken care of when the 915 went in. This bolt that goes in the case half around #2/#3 has me really upset. No way to fix that without splitting the case.

No reason to be down.......I'll just move forward and just be happy to be here. Looking forward to sharing what I decide to do.

It won't be an LS or a Subaru.

Good news to report. The case is split and based on what we thought compared to what we now know this engine is in fantastic shape. We estimate maybe less than 5000 miles since a complete rebuild about 18 years ago.

I am having the oil pump looked at and opened up a bit. Replacing cams, opening up the heads a bit. New PMO's will be ordered. I'll retain my intake, have that possibly opened up a bit. I will post my 40 Weber's for sale at some point. They will need a good servicing and I have a reservation with Performance Oriented for next April (April 2025).

I am having the fan and shroud refinished. Will paint the engine cover.

Plans include upgrading the Alternator for future electric air conditioning.

That's great to hear, Steve! Glad it's all going to be ok. (technically much better than OK, but you get my drift)

What influenced your decision to go with new PMOs versus a rebuild of your Webers by Paul at Perfomance Oriented? I have a reservation for October. Gives me some time to think about whether to put that much money into them. I have Carter-built Webers on the 2.2 in my 1971 T. So helpful to see the scale of your project.

My only consideration is time...... The cost of the rebuild I expect to be nearly 4K from Paul.
At that cost I am not that far away from buying new PMO's.

If you think your getting your Carb's done in October please do not get your hopes up. I spoke to him a few weeks ago and he doesn't even have a shop to work out of currently. Existing orders will come first like yours. My April 2025 reservation will probably be more like October 2025. Paul does amazing work but I'm not waiting that long for carburetors.

Those front indicators are from flat6illumination. Just so you know they needed some love when I got them. Forewarned.

Finally getting around to catching up on this thread. Most excellent!

I'm sure you know this but it would be wise to check the roundness of the main bearing bores to be sure they were properly addressed during the last build. The 2.7 I recently split was a horror show from front to back, top to bottom. Ollies took care of me... eventually!

I should add, which you also probably know - new cases are available. The machining bill (plus the excruciatingly long wait!) to bring yours up to like-new condition might make a new case look good...

Thank you for your insight. I feel really blessed. I had Ed Mayo look this over and it is in fantastic shape. I only cracked the case to address the oil leaks. I knew Ed had rebuilt this like 15 years ago and it had sat, mostly, during that time. I think the mileage is like 4900 miles since the rebuild.

Had I not had good news I was prepared to buy a 3.2 or a 3.6. I really wanted this narrow fendered car to remain a 2.7 on carb's. As you know the big issue with these cars is time and money. Time being the big morale killer. So having a solid case that hasn't been beat on is a blessing.

The cooling system was a 50 year old Porsche Oil Cooler.

The new cooling system is now a CSF on engine oil cooler with all new lines, a CSF front fender Carrera style cooler and Elephant Racing finned oil lines.

Sorry for the brief or lack of narrative on what I am doing or how I am doing it.

I will remove the oil console next and send it out for the modifications needed to accommodate the new front oil cooler.

Test fitting the carbon fiber mini duck made by fellow Pelican Jonny042.

This part is some of the finest fitting carbon fiber I have ever dealt with.

It will be painted !!!! I love carbon fiber but the look of it on a long hood doesn't work for me.

Who makes your LED headlights? Same Flat6Illumination?

Also, did you think about getting Damon Series 900 to build you a new engine shroud instead of painting yours? His are "factory" nice and reasonably priced I seem to remember.

I had to switch gears on my headlights twice. I wanted 911Eleven Headlights. When I realized that wasn't going to happen I decided on 9Haus, after speaking to Jake, the owner. I am very happy I went this direction.

I did not consider having a engine shroud made. I didn't even realize that was a possibility. I had mine cerakoted. It looks pretty good. Thanks for the heads up on Damon Series 900.

Cleanup and modifications continued today with the removal of the oil console.
This needs to be fitted with the thermostat Chuck sent along with my finned oil line plumbing kit.

Here is my '72 MFI someone butchered in the 80s. I plan to bring it back to a longhood and your car is giving me even more motivation. Jut gotta find body panels that fit my budget

I don't know what is more difficult to believe. The fact that your car is a 72 or that someone actually did that to a 72. Wow that takes balls and money. I'm guessing that G body face lifts were a thing at some point. The 80's were a wild time. Good luck on your renovations.

From difficult parts to find to machining and fabrication this one had me at times.
It's done and so is the work on my oil pump so things can move forward with the motor.

There was a day when early Porsche's didn't cost much, so modifying them wasn't really all that big of a deal. I paid peanuts for my car, but I sure wish I had hindsight, or I would have kept mine somewhat stock.
I just changed the oil on my 72 and was looking at the area where the oil tank is located. And thought, man do I need to clean that area. Looking at yours, it's clear mine needs a ton of work to look halfway as nice as yours.

tobluforu, the shear amount of crap and dirt behind my oil tank was dumbfounding. Stuff just kept falling out. I had to clean the tank to attack the pin holes in the bottom. The oil console needed modifications for the front cooler I added. Along the way everything got a good cleaning.

I am taking the car off the lift this morning and flipping the car around.....

THe interior is finish..... that is until I decide to modify something. But most of what I wanted to accomplish is done.

The Tach arrived after 9 months.

It will be nice to get the motor finished so I can move the car out and get better pictures.

It will be interesting to see what you think about the orange tach face as you’re driving around.

As others have said, really nice work. What I didn't read after a few times through what's the wheel size and ground to fender lip measurement? Mines lower, PeteKZ is higher and my rear suspension is next on my list. PP has red Koni's on sale for a SWB and I'll order those before the sale is over. Support our host!

The wheel size is 16x7. I have not finished the ride height as my engine is out !!! The rear was pretty darn close when I dropped the engine. The front was about 10mm high. I didn't worry too much about either as that can and will be finalized after my engine goes back into the car.
