Clock not working
 

My clock is not working on my 1984 911 Carrera. It lights up when I turn on the headlights so I take it is getting power. Where do I start with trying to diagnose what is going wrong?[/I]

The power that lights the light and the power that provides continuous power to make it keep time all the time come from two separate sources.
(One has little to do with the other)

First verify the clock has 12 volts on the continuous connection.

And /or you can also test it on a bench in a quiet location with a 12 v supply/ battery to hear the movement - or not
Making noise doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good, just means internal fuse not blown.

If the problem is within the clock. You can attempt a repair.

Most likely you will need to change the capacitors. It's a fairly easy task if you can solder and have patience to open the housing correctly. As noted, many posted threads on this one.

I just fixed mine as a DIY job. Not too difficult and as the posts above mention, you just need to make sure you have a continuous 12v connection. Easy to test with a volt meter. If you have a continuous connection, it is most likely the capacitors. There are 2 that need to be replaced and make sure you have the correct polarity before re-soldering. Do a search on this forum as I found a step by step process (with pictures). Took me about an hour for the entire repair and well worth it for the effort.

100% agree. Exactly what happened to mine...after many cycles of sitting + battery dying (before I took possession). Replaced capacitors and original clock still works like a charm :)

+++ On the capacitor replacement, couldn't agree more. My clock had suffered a number of sitting/dead battery cycles over the years (prior to my possession). Soldered in new ones and works like a charm...as others have stated, just be very careful on polarity. Clock has been keeping perfect time for almost a year!

Hold up. It might be simple. The light circuit is not the same as the power for the clock. The most likely thing is that the ground has come loose on the back. Slide it out of its hole and check that there's power coming in and a connected ground.

My clock is intermittent. How difficult is it to remove?

easy to remove.. just grab the edges and pull… but gently, you don’t want to pull out all the wires if you yank it. might be stuck somewhat if it hasn’t been removed in a while. slightly pull and twist at the same time.

Rubber sleeve rings get stiff over time, maybe gunked up. Pull, twist a little, even a thick rubber and around the metal rim will give you some grip to twist. Once it’s out wipe a tad bit of silicone to the rubber sleeve. All gauges remove in this method.
