Oil Pressure??
Hello All, I’m new hear and a new proud owner of a ’77 911 Targa. I will have lot’s of questions since this is my first Porsche. My first one is with the oil pressure. When I first start the car the pressure comes up to read 60 psi which seams normal, then as the engine warms up the pressure drops to around 20 psi even at driving rpms, as the oil temp rises it drops to near 0, the low oil light never comes on. Rpm change does not seam to affect pressure. Does this sound like the sending unit or do I have more serious problems?
Thanks in advance for your impute

Hmm, I would check the sender, but this does sound odd. Often when these senders go bad the gauge reads max. So once the car warms up the gauge reads 0 whether you are driving the car or idling??
normal is at least 10 psi per 1000 rpm, so at idle most people will expect anywhere from 5-15 psi, and then at say 3000 rpm most people will see anywhere from 30-50 psi. You might want to get a cheap gauge from an autoparts store and stick that in to verify your gauges readings. Also, how high does your temperature go?

Steve, Temp seams to come up normal to about 210 and oil pressure reads between 0-maybe 5 at idle or high rpm doesn't change. Will any cheap oil pressure gauge work? Thanks

Sure, any gauge will work.

Hi Ted,
I have a 2.7 1975 911 that I've driven daily for the last 20+ years, in that time I've had to replace the sending unit twice for symptoms like your describing, since they are relatively cheap and easy to change I'd try that first. Good luck |
