BOGE Strut ID - color

Need help/confirmation on this, my I understand is that all Boge struts were painted black.

I have a set that I started to remove the black paint to restore and they’re yellow (under the black). Now I know someone could have striped them to bare metal and painted them yellow.

Is it that case (striped and painted yellow), or could they have come in yellow?

What’s the date code on this one?

Thanks

Boge struts came in black or grey, bilsteins yellow or green.

Those look like Bilstein inserts, and the cut off part was the bracket that holds the brake line.

The bracket that holds the brake line is still there, the angle of the photograph make’s it look like it was cut.

I figured someone painted them.
They did an excellent job; the black came off with lacquer thinner, the yellow is on there really well…

Any idea of the date code, other than what’s in the picture, no other letter’s/numbers.

Also, PET shows the part number as Bilstein - guessing Porsche used them on both.

You guys can say what you want, but the yellow paint sure does NOT look "added" to me, as the lettering is very uniform and there does not look to be any yellow paint within the indentations of the letters. It looks like the lettering was added after painting (which it would be if the factory painted them yellow). Also, I don't see any black paint under the yellow where it has been scuffed, etc. I know the whole normal color scheme with Boge being black, and Bilstein being yellow or green, but i am just giving an observation on what I see. Very strange, but it wouldn't be the first time an "exception" to normal convention popped up...just my $0.02...

Agree w Lyle, That's a factory yellow Boge! Then someone said "it supposed to be black" and painted it. Get all that black off and keep them yellow. Worth a ton of money due to scarcity...

I don’t know about worth a ‘ton of money’, in the end they’re just Boge struts…and I’m unaware of any ‘special cars’ from Porsche that used yellow (closer to mustard) Boge struts.

I will restore them to the yellow color. The paint supply shop took some picture’s and it’s a very closer match to Atlas yellow.

You are not the only one with yellow Boge struts. Shaun @Tru6 right down hiway 20 from you in Cambridge also has a pair. Seems the last 2 digits 00 in the part number for yellow?

My '78 911 row also has yellow Boge struts and were painted black at one point. The base paint is definitely yellow. Did anyone figure out why they'd be yellow versus black/grey?

One note on the bolstering inserts… don’t use heat on that top nut if you plan on putting new bilsteins in. There’s a rubber seal that will melt. I had to sacrifice it on my 87 Boge that was converted, but I went w koni inserts and the gland nut that comes stock on the Boge struts.

Now I see how you PM'd me.

I also had a set of yellow Boge's about 10 years go and posted here about them. No idea what happened to them but it is interesting the number that are yellow.

Shaun, before I messaged you, I didn't realize the thread was from '07.

Either way, anyone else that has info on "yellow" boge struts, please chime in. For reference, my car is a 78 911 row.
