83’ Porsche 911sc Barn find project

Taking on my first project car ever with this beautiful 83’ Porsche 911sc. She has been sitting for about 5 years in a pretty dingy barn in south shore Massachusetts, and has just under 60,000 miles on it. I am 25 and have loved Porsche for as long as I can remember, so this project is a dream come true. Getting hands on the car Wednesday, November 8, so will post some more pictures and get a better diagnosis on what needs to be done then. I deeply appreciate any guidance and advice on this forum, and can’t wait to get rollin!

Welcome to this forum. Yes you will be able to get your answers here.

Why was it parked for 5 years?

Before you try to start it, Do yourself a big favor and read some of the threads here about restarting cars that have sat for long periods. We've had about 4 of those this year. With only 60Kmi on it, you may get lucky and have no significant problems to deal with.

Important is to drain out as much old fuel as possible, then inspect the tank and screen that screws into the bottom of the tank for blockage, crud from old gas, and rust. Clean out any contamination.

Follow the suggestions in the other threads, then post further questions here.

Welcome Jandrew! I will second PeteKz's suggestions. He has been given me loads of practical advice in both diagnosis and repair over the past year.

As PeteKz mentioned starting w scouring the boards here for 'revival' discussion threads, I'll share the thread that I started: 1983 SC - Reviving after ~ 4 years dormant

This was for my 83 SC that sat for ~ 4 years.

Good luck, and look forward to following your posts.

JAndrew98- I was 25 when I bought my '83 ROW 911SC. Sad to say that was exactly 35 years ago! Let me congratulate you for purchasing a car with the best of the SC engines- the later ROW versions. When they are happy and running right, they are great! Revvy and strong!

I strongly recommend you resist the urge to drive it until you get things completely checked & sorted, especially with the fuel. My car had been sitting before I bought it, but I was unaware.
And the fuel had varnished somewhere in the system such that the WarmUp Regulator and Fuel Distributor were contaminated with junk- that's not cheap for an expert to fix. Whether my units were varnished or became contaminated from driving with old fuel, I'll never know, but fixing that was not fun.

At 40 years of age, your car might need both those components to be refreshed anyway, while the rest of your checklist is being worked through. Hopefully, experts could guide you here as to the necessity of doing this before your first drive. See my recent posts in the Engine Rebuilding Forum Thread "The 'Prodified' 3.2SS" to understand my challenges following the rebuilding of both those units. I will help guide you with this if requested.

One last bit of advice: If you haven't been around 911s in the past, the chances of fouling up things can be much greater than improving them. It wouldn't hurt to have an old-time expert take your car for the first few checkups to get things started correctly and to help introduce you to the nuances of these cars. They are not particularly difficult, but they are decidedly different. Paying for true expertise may sound expensive but in the end be downright cheap. Just a thought.

Best of luck! Please keep us posted!

Good for you and congrats on your purchase. I too have a 1983 911SC i’ve had for two years. Still sorting it out. Trans is done, engine in work, trunk sorted out, gages sorted, wheels done. You can check out some of my posts and maybe give you a peek of things to come for you.

And Jjm4Life, I’m starting the work in the natick area but did recently move to Weymouth! Pulled the car from a Duxbury barn.
