bb, I'm not into doing cosmetic things much on the car, ya'know everything has to have a purpose, but I'm digg'in those gauges man! What do you think the result would be with black faced gauges?

Can you show us what you did for the lighting? Is it an internal mod, or did you fabricate something to fit into the existing light sockets?

Can you post a pic of what's in there?

Thanks,

Karl Ellzey

bb, I really like 'em. Have you driven at night with them? What's your thoughts on glare, visibility, contrast, etc?

Uhh, Richard, have you seen the rest of the car? His car rocks. Definitely not rice...

North Hollywood did the blue LED. They also do this is white, the charge is $200.00. And, Richard, everyone has his/her opinion. On my car my opinion is the one that counts. I had the white gauges on my 70T and this time I wanted to do the LED. Talking to the guy at Hollywood i was convinced to try the blue and was glad I did. I don't know about glare since I haven't had the car out yet this spring.

You paid how much for this??
Too many shadows and hot spots if your pictures are true.

There was a guy on the board a while back that was going to develop a kit for LED gauge lighting. What happened to him?

Has anybody installed colored replacement lights on the dash with the white gauges? Is this different than putting in LED lights?

Doug,

Tony Kelly (APKhaos) was doing the lighting mods with red LED's. I think he is still working out the kinks. I've seen them in person, they do look cool.

Maybe he'll chime in......

You can polish a turd... I'm living proof

Those gauges look really good. If I didn't have a long hood I'd definitly go for them. IMHO they wouldn't look right on a longhood but if I had an SC or Carrera they'd rock.

BB:

Glad you are happy with your new gauges. I do understand why you made a change from the stock guage faces and lighting. My own personal taste is different so I won't be doing the same type of mod. I don't know what can be done to improve the appearance of the stock guages at this time. Thanks again for showing us another option and happy motoring with your new look.

If the blue lighting was a little more spread out and not so bright in certain spots it would look outstanding. Doing something in indigo (besides being expensive) would probably be the best. Unfortunately i don't think any are made in indigo. Personally i believe that doing something in Rice would mean that it'd have to have no logical or reasonable perpose. In this case when you compare to the original gauges, i think it's very purposefull and makes it easy to read during night rides. Just because it's related to riced cars doesn't nessecarily make it rice. The horribly unaerodynamic body kit, overly large exhaust, and low profile tires for drag racing (in going in a straight line, more profile is better) makes it rice. Brightly lit gauges no matter what color are an improvement if your stock gauges are sometimes hard to read, it's that simple.

I'm not sure if this is up-to-date, but once upon a time, red lighting was preferred for gauge lighting as the human eye is more senstive to this area of the light/color spectrum.

Maybe if FA18 takes a peek here, he can gives us a status report on fighter jet instrumentation lighting.

Well that make some sense since all gauges have red as the color for rpm limit and red for the needle. As a matter of fact, VW's use i think blue and red for everything in the instrumentation.

I've been looking for a bulb replacement with the correct base, but in a higher wattage. Looked EVERYWHERE on the net, but they don't exist.

Someone replied to the 911 forum about using a really small 5 watt superwhite xenon bulb as a replacement, but I think he said he was drunk when he posted it... honest.

I have yet to find a small enough superwhite (xenon) bulb that would fit in the VDO bulb housing. The smallest I can find is a type 194 bulb and the bulb is bigger than the entire hole it fits into... plus you'd have to get some sort of socket for it.

The next option is to fit a LED with custom base that will allow you to utilize the existing wiring, but that's a dead end since the LEDS really cast light in one plane. You have to get a regulated LED assembly. (You have to maintain the proper voltage across the LED or you can fry it.)

So, until we can convince a manufacturer to make a brighter bulb, or find an aftermarket bulb that has higher wattage and the correct base, the internal LED option is the best bet.

Does anyone have any bulb manufacturing connections. I bet if we could get a 4 watt bulb made, then we could order a bunch... but probably not enough to justify the cost.

By the way, the bulb is a 2 Watt, 12 VOLT, Ba7s base bulb in case anyone can find a higher wattage equivalent.

bb, the picture's lousy but I have a feeling they look good in person.

Richard, I'm not sure how changing the color of a bulb is rice. Did you know that almost all the new Volkwagens come with blue LED backlighting in the guage cluster? I guess the VW/Audi corp are ricers
