Porsche Crest Valve Adjustment

I just bought my first Porsche a couple of months ago, and always own muscle cars but never a Porsche. So I am trying to listen to the car everytime I go out to insure it stays in proper mechanical condition. Last time I took it out not sure if its the cold in NJ or what, but seems I hear a rocker arm noise coming from the pass side of motor, is this normal after warm up? Also what is the average cost of a valve adjustment and an oil change run? The car has a modifed BTR ruff conversion in it with twin plugs and all the goodies, the idle runs smooth at 1000 rpm, is this where it should be?

That idle is about right. Most of the cars around that year are set to 950. Not unusual to have ticking valves when warm. The valve adjust and oil change is about 300-500 dollars. This is a great DIY job. Look at all the threads on here to see how.

One issue that comes up alot is the "feel" that the feeler blade should have when the valves are adjusted correctly. This comes up because any looser than .004 inches and you get quite a bit of noise. I use a .003 feeler and don't have to worry about the "feel". Also if you turn the adjuster screw to zero clearance and then back it off 30 degrees you'll be very close. (the adjuster screw is 1mm per turn so 36 degrees is .1mm or .004 inches).

This well designed valve adjustment tool from Snap-On would work great IF it were available in 13 mm. Only 12 mm and 10 mm. Too bad.

sig_a,

This is an identical of the above tool. Brand name: Blue-Point YA YA8890 13 MM. Once you used this special tool, you'll probably not do another 911 valve adjustment without one. Highly recommendable tool to have.

How is there room for that giant screwdriver? I needed to use a stubby for many of the valves, especially on the LH (by the cat) exhaust side.

I remove the pre-muffler on mine to have more room. That tool looks pretty cool. I was actually thinking of trying the alternate go/no-go setup next time around & see how that works vs. mangling a .004" special feeler blade (again). I think I bought like 6 of them last time I ordered valve adjust stuff.

Can you use a Snap on Screwdriver and then buy the other portion? Their website shows you have to buy each item seperate and I would love to be able to use an existing screwdriver. That tool looks like the ticket for sure.

RUFNIT..

Assuming from your car discription that it is a Turbo.

- In this case I would suggest that you add $1000 to the cost of the valve adjustment and oil change as stated above.

- As a DIY job if it is a Turbo, it will then be a bit more involved, purely from the standpoint of added items that will need to be remved.

- would think your idle is probably correct.. of course based on what kind of cams you have and your AFR (you did say it was modded)

You're in the right place though... there is plenty of help and support on this board.

Good luck!

This is a Blue-Point tool brand distributed by Snap-On. Got this as a Father's Day gift many years ago. One of the best and most treasured tool in my tool cabinet. FYI.

Reviving an old thread. In case anyone is still looking for one of these, I couldn't find a Snap-On or Blue Point version, but I did find a knockoff version on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Dreyoo-Adjustment-Adjusting-Grinding-Compatible/dp/B0CPJ8TTNG

I've done a VA using the standard wrench and screwdriver, but based on recommendations of folks like Tony, this seems like an easy buy at $25.
