Rain Gutter Seam
Anyone have any info on how the rain gutter seam is layered or formed? I am replacing rear fibreglass quarters with steel. I've found some rust that extends all the way up into the seam, and it appears that the top layer belonging to the quarter has rusted through.
I haven't been able to find any pictures or info on how this seam is layered up or how the quarter is folded over or locks with the other layers. Any info on how a quarter gets attached at the seam would be appreciated. Tips, pics, whatever you've got. I can't seem to find any info myself. Thanks!! |

A surprise lurks, I’m afraid….
![]() ![]() My guess is that your inner fender panel (double thickness, BTW) is done. Have a look at my Sweet Transplant thread. Johan

The rust stops at the edge of where I was removing paint, so I am inclined to believe it is only where the filler and fibreglass layers trapped moisture against the unprotected metal. Who knows, maybe I'm in for it, but I won't know until I peel off that quarter, and I'm not doing that until I know how to redo that seam. Your car looks incredible, BTW. The shots of your car in metal work and then primer are super cool. Love seeing that stage. |

That is pretty helpful! Seems that the roof is seam sealed to the inner structure and the quarter folds over the edge of both layers. Anyone know if there are spot welds in the quarter panel flange to the gutter? Seems like it would make folding easier.

Rennch on YouTube (and here) did a gutter delete on his blasphemy build and goes into pretty good detail about how the seam is created and how to unfold/remove it and deal with the result.

Editing this post to organize all the useful info I've found. Switched to searching for roof skin replacement and rain gutter delete for info on the seam. As an aside, the rain gutter delete threads are pretty hard to look at...
911 Sunroof Cancelled https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WW7Ol0g078 Quote from RUF on the gutters via Iciclehead in an old thread The roof of your Porsche is made up of three metal sheets. One over the roof, one over the rear fenders (the C-Pillar), and one along the side, which goes inside the car. These three plates were originally hammered together at the Porsche factory to form the rain gutters. They are not bound together in any other way. Through our gutter conversion, the area where the three pieces fold together is cut off, and then all three are welded together. Welding of the plates greatly increases their strength, and definitely makes the body much more stiff all around and along the roof line. Cutting, welding, and repainting are the only processes undergone in this conversion. No other parts or procedures need to be assembled or carried out.
