The tuffdeck distributor quoted me 2.99/ft for the 12x12 in a standard color. I would have to pick the product up here in San Diego. Looking at 630 sq/ft which makes this product too pricy for me.
What colors are you going to use? |
RaceDeck Diamond pattern Graphite 50% Royal Purple 50%
Roughly 500 sq ft. total. So 250 each color w Edging for 22ft. Walls and cabinets are all white and I'm not too big on black and white. Kiwi - it would be Diamond Grip Blue and Gray I think. |
I went out to see the champ cars at Laguna Seca this past weekend. All the teams used a portable plastic/rubber floor material for their paddock area. It was composed of 12x12 tiles and I assume they rolled it out in sheets though I didn't see them lay it down.
The tiles had a sort of waffle pattern that was not solid surface, sorta like a mesh. Sorry no pictures. Anyone know what these team are using? |
The VCT is solid color throughout. It is a hard asphalt-like tile with very high compressive strength. Focused pressure from steel (ie: jack stands) will leave indents (I have small 1x1 pieces of plywood I put down first), and dragging a jack will leave scratches, but since the color is throughout, they aren't very noticeable. I've done brakes on it and the old pad dust wipes up easily. I've also spilled tons of dirty oil on the tile, and it wipes up harmlessly. I think brake cleaner (MEK?) will mess it up.
Go buy a few tiles at Home Depot and experiment with it. Remember, once installed, it is best to have it polished and waxed. This seals the tile and prevents most stains. It is not maintenance free, but it looks so good that it is worth the PIA. I wash cars on Saturday, and there isn't a weekend that goes by when someone doesn't make a comment about it when they walk their dogs by the house! |

Don't small parts fall in the holes of Racedeck and Fastdeck?
|
Wifey is worried about the VCT what with all the ice, snow and slush that falls off the bottom of the car and out of the wheel wells in winter. I try and knock some of it off outside but you can't get it all. She thinks it will be too slippery.
|
Yes, that fastdeck stuff is similar. Though what I saw at laguna was more of a mesh. No doubt a competing product from another manufacturer.

Regarding dirt etc, getting in the holes - I don't think I would get the 'self draining" tiles that do have these holes or grid pattern called "Free Flow". I would get the solid tiles with a raised pattern. Three or four choices for that.

Racedeck guy now at $3.00/ft FOB Destination. So $3.50 became $3.08 and is now $3.00 delivered.
We'll see what tomorrow brings but I'm getting close to buy! Need a little project for the first week of July. |
Here's the reply I just recieve:

Most of the Cart teams use the kiwi tile . I got mine from one of the teams replacing it with new. They take the tile up in about 3' x 6' sections and stack it on specially built carts . A lot of the tracks these guys go to don't have garages so they use this as temporary floors under there tents. Jim |
Mabye buy 1 or 2 tiles and use it under the jack stands/hammer/burn/paint/solvent etc just for practice??
|
The motormat.com stuff looks about the same but is the "self draining" type that I'm a bit leary about. Traps dirt etc in the holes.
Anyway I placed an order today for 500 Diamond pattern Racedeck tiles. I'll post some photos when they get in of before/after/during etc. |
Saturady Poll 1X1 or 4x4?
Ok so here is the floor "before". Just finished the walls drywalling and paint. The really strange thing to most of you on the right rearground is a "snowblower" used to evacuate the area in front of your garage and drive so you can get the Porsche out in Feb.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/Floor-before.JPG Here is the Saturday poll: The Racedeck tile came packed in 4x4 squares (24 inch by 24 inch). I had thought it would be loose 12 inches tiles. But I kinda like the 4X4 tiles. What do you think - lay it in 4X4 or go back to 1x1? Picture shows 4x4 or 24x24 squares. The wifey hates the colors already so no poll on that. Thanks. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/Floor_Twoft.JPG |
looks nice...
but what exactly are the advantages of these tiles??? Well I mean for CART it can be a temporary floor on grainy dirty asphault, maybe over packed dirt... but for a permanent garage floor isn't epoxy or tiles the preferred method? How does it put up with spills? I'd imagine in a 911 garage, it might catch the spills, but wouldn't some of the fluids leak thru the crack and get to sit on the concrete untended to for years.... also tiles that aren't bonded to the ground how do they put up with wheels being turned etc... keep us updated with your experience... MJ |
These will last much longer than an Epoxy floor - 15 years min vs five or so. if you get a really large spill like dump 13 quarts of oil (who ever does that?) just pop out a section of tile, drag it out in the drive and clean up. For normal cleaning any degrearser will do.
Here is a bunch of shots of the install this weekend. 500 ft or so. Simple tools needed. saber saw to cut tile, rubber mallet to seat them and screw driver for wedging work. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/Floor_tools.JPG The tiles were delivered UPS in 2x2 boxes of 48 tiles each. I got eleven boxes. Delivery was FOB destination at $3.00. It ain't cheap. 2.0 times my quote of $750 for professional Epoxy with shot blasting prep. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/Floor_deliv.JPG Not much prep required for this stuff. It is fully suspended so you do not glue down the tile. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/Floor-prep.JPG |
With the suspension system you need to leave about 1/4 in. all around for thermal expansion. The directions said as much as 3/8 if installing in the cold. It may be WI but it wasn't cold today.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/Floor_edge.JPG Cutting and fitting is very easy but the tile is single directional so too many beers and you will spoil a tile or two. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...or_Partial.JPG Dragging the fridge around did not mar the tile but I was careful. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa... back wall.JPG |
