Sound & Noise

It ought to be possible to find modern sound deadening materials that outperform the ones used in the early 911s decades ago (and are lighter to boot). This would allow one to restore/modify their car into a light weight 'sports touring" car that lets in nice engine and exhaust noises but muffles the annoying tire and road noises. (sorta my own holy grail). So here is a little collection of links & tips.

A couple of examples: 1. PAG came up with a lighter wt. sound deadening pad for the bulkhead area; 2. The 1975-on seats are more supportive yet lighter than the old horsehair seats in the early cars; 3. the carpeted foot mats in the Boxster are a lot lighter than the ones from the 1970s.

There is a place in Bend Oregon that makes light weight sound deadening pads for the auto stereo market. They should come up with the right Google search.

This looks like a pretty good primer:

They also make a spray on or brush or roll on liquid viscoelastic sound deadener.

An engineering text on this area (NVH) would be make wise reading material for those who want a fast, light wt. street car.
