Removing pressed cam box plug
How can I safely remove this cam box plug while the motor is assembled? '79 3.0http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1701707176.png

To pull it out the back? Drill it greased up, then thread a bolt in and yank?
|
Or just stick a long bar/ socket extensions/ broomstick whatever and tap it out. Use a little heat on it first.

i wonder what is the reason you need to remove it?

Same question. If you don't have to remove it for a good reason, don't.
|
Yeah I'm trying to imagine the combination of needs that would require pulling that plug while also keeping the engine in the car.

I just did this a few days ago to add a Clewitt Cam Sync. Luckily, I used a screw driver and pressed on one side and the other side popped out enough to grab it with vise grips. .....came right out.

Easy with the cam tower on a bench and no camshaft. On an assembled engine (OP's q), I'm not sure how to do it without drilling the plug. Personally I wouldn't be happy to create shavings that would go in the motor. Granted you'd probably be able to get most/all of them out once you removed the plug, but I'd worry I'd miss some and that would be no bueno.

Yup, Clewitt Cam sensor. I drilled and priyed it out. But corrosion on housing made it difficult. Thanks for the input. Now I have to drill and tap into the cam end. Terrifying. Any tips from those who have done it?

The kit came with a drill fixture. Easy peasy. Collecting the shrapnel afterward was easy with a magnet and vacuum. I took my time and cleaned, cleaned, cleaned. And don't use compressed air. stuff will go everywhere you don't want it to. |
