1970 RSR Build Making Progress

New to the forum, excited to join the folks who are building some great cars.

I've spend the last 8 months working on my 70T to RSR conversion. I've had the amazing pleasure of working with some great folks across the US to build the car, I will share the engine build details today.

Engine is a 3.5L high-strung mainly motorsport internals twin plug MoTeC build running 996 GT3 82mm Throttle Body induction. Even working with great folks like Brian Pauter to build this motor, still a large learning curve. Motor is currently at Eisenbuds here in Denver to cam timing and off to Chris Cervelli for finalizing wiring harness. Motor in the photo as you can see is still not yet complete, but close.

Following! Beautiful looking engine!

KRLocke 12-08-2023 03:45 PM

motor looks great! what are the build specs? what hp are you expecting?

Uwon 12-09-2023 04:02 AM

Wellcome
Yes, need some specs.
Johan

Happy to share the specs in detail:

Started with a 3L case
996 gt3 3.6 crankshaft with 76.4 stroke
996 gt3 oil pump
996 gt3 oem main bearings (surprisingly expensive)
Pauter lighter weight gt3 chromoly connecting rods
Custom CP pistons with 11.3 to 1 compression, coated side skirts
98mm Mahle cylinders
Twin plug
Pauter machined heads, larger intake/exhaust valves- 52mm intakes x 42mm exhaust with 8mm stems and Titanium retainers, HD dual springs, factory bead locks and spring cups / bottom locators. 5 angle valve seats, bored intake and exhaust and 42mm port-matched to 996 intake.
Webcams 464/465 grind, medium aggressive cam I suppose
996 gt3 intake, using Adaptive motorsports adapters to fit to 2 stud head.
Adaptive motorsport fuel rails with factory gt3 injectors
Stock resonance valve machined (plastic) to fit the narrower plenum center spacing
Adaptive motorsport plenum
82mm GT3 RS throttle body, fly by wire gas pedal from a 997
MoTeC M130
Exhaust is 1 7/8 D equal length headers with 997 4.0L titanium center box
We added quite a bit of electronics to modernize the motor: head temp sensor, 02 sensors, crank position sensor (on flywheel), cam position from the distributor, fuel pressure sensor, MAP sensor and vacuum switch for the resonator.

At 3.5L I would be happy with 325hp to 350hp. There are 3.5L motors making quite a bit more power. The motor was designed to rev to 8K, but realistically making peak power at 7K. We selected the cam to give more mid range torque versus HP at 8k.

We are missing the ignition part !!

I'm using JB racing twin plug distributor and 993 coilpack hybrid. : )

Hey Rob! Great to meet you the other week - the wheels look amazing...sitting on the floor at my new place in Hudson. Should have a lease on the workshop space this week or next, then bodywork, etc for the build I'm doing. I'll probably have a few questions for you when I start on the engine path.

Best,
Erin

Those are some good names building and finishing your engine. Very excited to see your build come together.
Where in Colorado are you?

Robs911RSR 12-11-2023 08:26 AM

Thank you Erin - glad to hear your move went well.

Hi Levi, I am in Denver. My group of friends all seem to own modern and air-cooled 911's. Great combination to have a classic 911 and more modern cars as well.

Feel my 911 ruins all other cars for steering feel and feedback.

MBAtarga 12-11-2023 12:27 PM

In what state of build is the car/chassis?

Robs911RSR 12-11-2023 05:31 PM

The front and rear suspension and brake upgrades are complete. I need to order the EB Racing RSR flares and tackle that next.

The engine goes to Chris Cervelli this week for wiring harness and install.

Here are a few photos of the suspension and brakes.

996 front and boxster rear brakes, however sometimes I wish I would have gone with 930 brakes. Need to run 16" wheels with larger brakes, but they do feel amazing and don't need power assist.

ToySnakePMC 12-11-2023 06:32 PM

Great build. Unbelievable in the best way possible. Maybe me, but check the rear spring plates. The adjusting screw looks upside down. Love the engine build. It’s almost too pretty to use.

Robs911RSR 12-11-2023 07:18 PM

Thanks. The spring plate is actually bolted together as a single plate as the car runs on coilovers.

Appreciate the kind words.
