What to do to an SC while the drivetrain is out
1981 SC
I last had the motor and transmission out 28 years ago. Back then I did the clutch, had a shop do synchros and I resealed the easy areas of the motor. l have had a fun ride ever since. I'm pretty sure my clutch fork is failing, so the motor and trans are coming out. While they are out I want to freshen the trans and add a LSD. The motor also has some oil leaks I can address. What else should I do while I'm in there? This car will just be street use - probably no more AX or track events. Any recommendation for a street friendly LSD? I know how I'm spending my winter.... Thanks Guys!

Replace the vacuum line running to the tunnel for the brake booster and vent line for the evap. cannister. Those are relatively inexpensive and nice piece of mind even if they're not visibly cracked. I would also replace the tunnel lines if they're original. Len Cummings makes a great solution that's reasonable and it's a much easier job with the engine and trans outs.

It is (my opinion) much easier to replace the rear suspension bushings with the motor and transmission out. That might be something to look at.
Definitely check everything through the tunnel and address it while the motor is out. A good engine bay cleaning can't hurt. Maybe check the seal rubber around the engine tin. And check your ground straps. |

Great time to replace the rear wheel bearings, trailing arm bushings and other rear suspension bushings.

As far as the engine bay goes, it's a great time to clean any miscellaneous dirt/gunk out, plus check for corrosion, inspect the ground straps, and make sure every nut and bolt is tight that you have easy access to while you have all the free space.

THis^^. Especially the rear training arm bushings next to the front of the tranny. You must drop the trannny to get them out on most cars.

Fuel lines are new a couple years ago (Thanks Len!). Rear suspension bushings were done 25 years ago, but they groan when cold, so that's a good call.
SSi's have been on for years and I took out the evap canister decades ago... Thanks!

Replace all of the gaskets, seals and hoses for the intake.
Adjust the valves. Engine and transmission mounts.

I finally got around to pulling the engine and trans.
As I suspected, the throw out fork was cracked. Unfortunately, I also found a broken head stud. This job just got bigger and I have decisions to make.

You had attended one of the Engine Rebuilding Workshops in the past. You had witnessed how easy to do the rebuild and replace those notorious Dilavar head studs. How many miles do you have now on the odometer? Refreshing those cylinder heads might be a good time to do them too. Tony |

Hi Tony,
Yes I did enjoy your class. 140,000 on the ODO - about 80K of those by me. My plan was to wait until I retired in a couple years, build up a hotter motor (3.2 SS) , probably with ITB's and swap that in place of my original mill. (Al, I've been watching you!) Now I need to decide if I just freshen this motor up per Tony, or use this as the base for the hot rod. Thanks Guys!
