Hello community,
I’d like to introduce my self! I just acquired my first 911! It is a 1984 coupe in Schwartz black / black interior. Previous owner hadn’t driven in over 10yrs. He let me have it transported back to my garage so that I could do an inspection. In review I found three broken head bolts. I performed a leak down tests, on the left Bank of the motor was all within 4% on the right side where the broken head bolts were showed 20 to 40% on the back two cylinders. My plan is to drop the motor replace all head bolts with a ARP or equivalent. Replace the fuel lines, etc. if anybody has recommendations on anything else to replace / lookout for please let me know. The car has 78,000 original miles. The body is in fair shape. The paint is a six. really excited just to get it on the road. I’m really more familiar with vintage BMW 2002 as I’ve consistently have had one for the past two decades. I do have a 1976, 912E, which I’ve enjoyed for the last eight years. That motor had work done to it previous from my ownership and was bored to a 2.4 L converted to carburetion pulls very strong and sounds wonderful does not get the gas mileage the original ones do anyhow, thanks again for allowing me to join the group, Nick. |

Welcome from another 1984 black/black coupe owner who is also dropping his engine to address some needs! Mine was a severe leak from the oil pressure sensor, but while I'm in there I'm going to replace the other triangle of death components. As I clean up the engine while it's out I'm sure I'll notice a few other items that could be original and should also be replaced. I'll adjust the valves and replace those cover gaskets. I'm hoping not to get too involved since it is a good running, approx 92k mile car. Also following this to see what other advice comes along!

Welcome Nick,
A couple things off hand to check out when you have the engine out are the vacuum line to the brake booster and the trailing arm bushings. On a car that old, brake hoses and tires are good items to go over. Best, Rutager

Nick, welcome to the Forum. Lots of info and expert knowledge here. Please post your location in your profile, and car details in your garage or sub-line (see mine). It will save a lot of questions and guessing.
As I tell most new 911 owners, "beware the slippery slope!" It's easy to get sucked into an engine rebuild and upgrade and end up spending more than $20000 "while you're in there." Instead, I generally advise fixing only the necessary stuff, and then driving it for a good time and distance before considering any upgrades. Since you have broken head studs, you have to drop the engine and strip it down to the short block. With only 78Kmi on it, DO NOT split the case unless you discover bigger problems after you get it down to the studs. You do not need ARP studs. The Porsche steel studs work as well and cost a lot less. You only need to replace the Dilavar studs, not the steel ones. Don't even pull out the steel ones, just leave them in place. I doubt you even need to refresh the valves/guides. If you only fix what's needed, you can do this job, with your own labor, for a couple thousand dollars. You might consider changing the cam, which will add $1000. But I'm getting ahead of the script: First, let's see what you have.
