'86 930 Transmission Sensor - How To Remove?

Getting ready to drop the engine and trans. This is the last wire connection to remove.

First off what is this? It is beside the passenger side output flange and the wire appears to go inside the trans. Maybe the speed sensor? This plate has a small spring wire pressing on it. I've removed the spring wire in these pictures.

How do I get this thing off?

I think I answered my own question. Looks like this is the speed sensor.

Looks like I just need to dig out the cap with a small screwdriver?

Disconnect the connector in the rear of the tunnel, the sensor comes out with the trans.

Thanks. Would this be in the interior or just in front of the trans under the car?

Do what John said in the thread you posted a link to. It should come right out. Leave it with the car while engine and gearbox are out.

Cheers

Thanks. I tried to remove the sensor but it won't budge. I guess 35 years of service has really seated the sensor. I tried a knife edge, a small screwdriver with no luck. Maybe some heat (low heat)?

The reason we disconnect in the tunnel under the rear cover is the shift coupler is also there and needs to be disconnected. But also with 915’s there is a reusable factory wire zip tie that has to be cut if u leave the wire and sensor behind. I continue to clean and reuse those original zip ties as they are special and hard to get.

They can be very difficult to remove, largely because of oxidization of the case. Unplug the sensor and move the cable from under the retaining clip (shown in your photo). Clean out as much dirt and debris from the sensor. Try soaking with a penetrant. After a good soak, pry carefully and gently on the two ears that stick out of the sensor. Patience and carefully working it out of its bore. I would avoid heat: you will melt the sensor.

Before reinstalling, clean the oxidization from the case bore for the sensor. The case is quite thin where the sensor needs to read the "tone wheel" magnets, so clean gently and carefully. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. As I tried to 'pop' out the sensor I had no leverage as my face was either against the rear brake rotor or from under the car I could barely see the sensor. Much easier to disconnect in the tunnel and pull out the wire.
