911 Bike Roofrack

Looking for a roof style bike rack for my 911... There was a member who posted an awesome picture of his in the "what did you do to your 911 today" thread - looking for something like that!

Anybody have recommendations on bike racks that you have positive experiences with?

Thanks!

I use the old style Yakima towers to fit rain gutters, cross bars, and the "steelhead" mounting channels. You can buy the whole setup on ebay for under 200 bucks.

The current Yakima offering is not as good, in my opinion. There are some earlier versions of the mounting "channel" (the part that clamps the fork) that were plastic and they would deform or cold flow, resulting in loss of the bike :- (

the setup below installs in 2 minutes and I've gone 100 mph with 2 bikes on it, no problem.

I've used Thule cross bars that attach to the gutters - secure and only minutes to mount.

And Rule 25 would pretty much rule out the use of a 911 as a bike transporter period

Awesome thanks guys!

Any preference to the full upright vs fork mounted systems? With my driving there will probably be a lot of lateral forces on the bike lol. Thule's design with the arm supporting the frame seems like a good idea....

the fork clamp mount is FAR superior - more secure, less wind resistance, and lower center of gravity. The upright bike mounts are "wobbly" and not as secure.

and, when you start towing your 911, you can transfer the Yakama stuff to your trailer.

There was some discussion of this on the Seasucker thread... is your comment from experience? On the surface the Seasucker is a great solution that i was going to make the plunge for. I really like that it is instantly removable.

Haven't used it, but my car is never clean enough that I'd glom something tight to any painted surface. If you can guarantee clean-room conditions under the suction-cups then you're probably ok; I'm not going to wash my car everytime I want to go for a bike ride.

Here is my el cheapo roof rack bought at ebay with a Thule Domestique. Cheap but it gets the job done.

what's the weight limits on those rack systems? i am looking for a way to take my track wheels with me and not have someone else carry them (no trailer).

I was reading online today and I think it said 150lbs or something.... kind of forget because when I saw the number all I thought was "more than enough for my bike".

I agree, wrinkledpants that car is gorgeous and it looks even cooler with the bike on it!

Love these pictures, awesome to see people using their cars!

I just bought the seasucker rack to use on my Miata (911 is still a long way from being done) and am going to use it for the first time today. So far, the idea seems great and it is super easy to install and remove. I have read many reviews on them and have not read one negative review from a person that has tried one. I will update you on what I find out.

Are those racks attached to the targa roof? I recall seeing rain gutter mounts on the front pillars with mounts attached to the front face of the targa bar before, but I hadn't seen racks on the roof gutters themselves.
