911SC Stuck in 2nd Gear

Hi

Ok, my shifter seemed to lose sense of where it was today and is now stuck in 2nd gear and won't move at all.

It has felt like it has lost "gears" before but it's come back very quickly with a wiggle of the shifter and has returned to working correctly.

I opened the inspection box between the seats and disconnected the shift linkage just to check it wasn't my shifter that wasn't broken, however the rob going back to the gearbox would only move forwards and backwards a very little bit even when I try to really move it.

Could this be as simple as the shift linkage being out of place. Could it be the shift rails are out of alignment?

The shift rob does seem really stuck or jammed but I'm hoping a simple problem and an easy fix??? Is this false hope?

Scott

Check the coupler under the plate on the floor between the rear seats

Yep checked that and it was fine. I actually disconnected it from the shift rod going to the transmission and I can not move the shift rod at all.

Maybe have someone rock the car a bit and try it.

It’s very, very hard to move the rod to the trans by hand at the linkage due to the lack of any leverage (that you otherwise get from the shifter!).

You might already know this but just calling it out explicitly.

Stuck in between two gears?
E.g. reverse and another?
Then it _might_ be possible to push it back through the reverse light switch. But heavy to do and you need to apply some force, probably with a lever against the gearbox traverse underneath the car. Shift lever has to be in neutral for that! Dangerous but there are success reports. Remember: Only when being stuck in 2 gears. You can crosscheck it by trying to turn the wheels back or forth. When the gearbox is stuck, the wheels wont turn anymore...

also if you can drain the transmission(get new side cover gasket or good epoxy like grey dirko) and remove the side cover plate on the bottom. There you can with a screwdriver move the fork and slider out of the gear.

Ivan

is that you Scott on impactbumper forum with this problem?

If you drain the transmission loosen the fill plug first, removal has been a trouble spot for some in the past. 17mm hex key if I recall.

I'll try and answer the questions

No history of rebuild and its not been rebuild in 2000km, just don't know if it was ever rebuilt.

It's actually stuck in second as I can drive the car and the clutch works. It's just jammed in second. No gear grinding, just stuck.

Yes the rod is very hard to move, just wouldn't move this the shifter either.

Yes me from Impactbumpers

I suspect when I remove the plate it will be out of alignment. What I don't want to do is a quick fix and get stuck again. So if its out of alignment, and there is nothing obvious what would you do, open the box?

if you remove the side -bottom cover there is nada you could do wrong. The plate itself had a guiding fork to the shift rod...Just read through the link i have sent you...
After you move the shift fork to idle position replace the side cover and see....

If I'm reading this correctly. the shift rod seems to be the problem. as it won't move even when disconnected from the transmission. IF that is the case then maybe you want to check all of the shift rod bushes before tearing into the transmission.

The car has a CAE shifter, that wouldn't have caused an issue?

I'll drop the transmission oil and check the side plate on Thursday and see what I can see.

I drive the car a lot so I don't want a temporary fix, feels like the box is coming apart unless something is obviously loose when I take the plate off

Thought I'd drop an update.

We took the inspection plate off the transmission and it was jammed inside. It turns out the trow needs adjusting on the CAE shifter as throw was moving too far. So time for an adjustment. Seems like nothing else is wrong except for the new shifter not having the correct adjustment when installed. Hopefully this fixes any future issues.
