Unhappy Baby won't start

Tried to start my baby this morning, she’s making funny noises and refusing to start. When I turn the ignition it turns over once then makes a nasty rapid ticking noise. The battery reads 12.05 volts at the terminals.

Any ideas? Does this mean a new starter?

Regards,
Andrew.

I'd suspect the battery first off. How old is it? I've spent alot of time and effort (and money) chasing starting problems in the past to eventually find out that it was simply the battery.

Just a suggestion...

Mike

First try jumping it... usually tick, tick, tick means a weak battery. If it jumps fine, then find out why the battery was near-dead. Check the voltage at the battery with the engine running - it should be around 13.5-14 volts indicating the alternator is working. Assuming it's good, then see if you left a light on or something - maybe you just need to check the battery electrolyte level and charge it up.

A bad starter with chewed teeth can account for the rapid ticking noise, but the info given is kind of vague and too many things can be wrong.

Battery for sure!

Mine did the same, not enough current to turn the starter, but enough to activate the solenoid.

Cheers

Probably the battery.

My battery went from "good" to bad in one night. Since nothing was on overnight I thought it was the starter, but when I jump started it, it fired right up. Too bad it wasn't the starter though, as an Optima battery was more expensive than a Bosch starter at the local auto parts store.

Thanks Guys,

It was the battery. Turns out 12.05 v is just not enough to get her going.

Jump started first time, guess I should of tried that first, but the lights and radio still worked and that ticking noise sounded bad, I just assumed the worst, doh!

I’ve taken the battery out and put it on a charger to see if it can be resurrected.

Regards,
Andrew.
