Anybody in Portland OR up for driveway diagnostics? Possible reward offered!

Anybody in Portland have some time to look at my 73.5 T here at my house? I'd like to change my status from "dead in the driveway" back to "driving restoration project". Car was running like a champ but died suddenly in conjunction with flashing the dodgy headlight/turn signal switch. Don't know if this was coincidence or not. Car is permatune equipped. All fuses look good but that's the extent of my troubleshooting skills. Can smell fuel when trying to start, but car just turns over but doesn't catch, so I'm leaning towards electrical/ignition areas.

Also, as an added bonus if you can help me get the car to start again I can provide a pair of Piloti driving shoes as payment!!

I'll watch for replies and see if anyone is interested.

Thanks - JeffSmileWavy

I wish I could get the time to help you. I just went through some similar issues with my '75. Mine turned out to be a bad coil. Are you getting a good strong spark at the plug wires? If not it may be coil or CD box (I think you have a CD box). To check for CD box function, listen for a whine coming from it when the ignition is on.

That's about all I can say from here.

Good luck,
Troy

Hi Troy,

Thanks for the reply. It would be a bit of a drive up from Lane county. I haven't had a chance to really troubleshoot anything yet. We'll see what happens when I take a look at it tomorrow. (Provided it's not raining. Stinks not having a garage!)

Sorry, forgot to mention the shoes would actually be new and in the size you choose - in case anyone thought I was just giving away a pair of my old shoes!

Jeff,

Have you verifed there is no spark at the plugs? If not, do this first. then Go to Perma-Tune and try their troubleshooting suggestions.

Good luck.

Thanks for the link Harry. I'll be running the gamut of tests tomorrow. How's your engine massage coming? I've watched you run the car at a couple autocrosses at PIR - looks fun.

Hi Jeff,

You're welcome!:)

I guess I don't remeber you but that's ok, next time. I

went to visit my car at the shop today (install engine sound pad). He is still disassembling but so far I will need a new clutch, 12 valves (I figured on 6 to inially budget), he did a quick pressure check on my cooler (that was ok but he wants to put a longer test on and submerge it to be sure), and we need to look at the cylinders to see if we need to rering. If budget allows, I will go to carrera tensioners and updated idler wheels. So far no real surprises. The cyliners are still on the engine but I tugged/wiggled on the head studs and they seem tight.

He tells me that returning the car to me in early July is still possible.

That means, I'll be at 7/20 AutoX. Are you going to go and drive?

Harry,

Right now my goal is to get the car running again and drive it to the historic races in July. Going all three days. Should be a blast.

At this point I just want it to start again so I'll be more motivated to get going on the cosmetic restoration.

Sounds good to me. Do you have a place in the Porsche Corral?

Hope to see you around.

If your Permatune is dead, JP has a NIB MSD that he doesn't need. You might want to contact him.
