I would like a new windshield

The windshield in my '86 is pitted and I would love to look through a nice clear windshield this spring. Porsche quoted me $1500 for a new windshield. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...ys/familie.gif

There's gotta be a cheaper alternative. I haven't had luck with any local glass shop. I'm waiting to hear back from Safelite but I highly doubt they have any experience in replacing these types of windshields.

Regarding the seal, I saw the recent thread on the URO seal but I'd rather not wait 6-8 months. Is the Porsche seal (911-541-225-04-OEM) no good? Is the URO seal superior in some way?

Isn't there free glass replacement as a part of car insurance in Massachusetts? Pitting and scratching won't (wouldn't) qualify, but a crack will. I'm not telling you to smack it with a hammer in the privacy of your garage, but...

The two times (here in CA) I've replaced 911 windshields, it's been about $800 cash. That included labor, and it was for the antenna-in windshield.

Major Ins companies would waive the costs if it’s a simple, non-spidered chip repair, but full replacement is still a matter of the deductible. Independent shop is the way to go, franchises SafeLite, Gerber probably lower than dealer and yes, it’s then a matter of an experienced installer or first-timer training session.

I had a “cheap” windshield installed by an indy on my 328is and the tint (lack thereof) was very obvious over the $$$ OEM supplier, good enough for a daily driver - so keep that in mind
My 911 has a Sigla replacement, probably +100k worth of pitting but not too distracting yet. Find out what glass mfg. is being supplied, PPG, Sigla, Pilkington etc. and get an idea of the tint level Before the installation. It’s not all the same as I found.

For what it’s worth -
I seen an episode of Wheeler Dealers that replaced an SC windscreen with a heated one (Ricky Evans Motorsport in the UK) for about 400 quid which had to be wired too. I’m not sure about where the wire grid is on these units but it’s something I’d consider as a good upgrade for cold weather climates knowing how vague the 911 hvac is and how windows fog up in winter.

Stoddard's has windshields from $600 to $1300

In Florida there is no question of deductible, windshields are free.

Kool Kats glass and a factory seal (in lieu of the URO which has a little wider lip) is about $500 shipped to your door.

Finding someone locally to rope it in shouldn't be too hard. Call vintage car repair shops and ask who does their glass. These guys aren't using safelite, I can guarantee that...

Don't knock Safelite. I had the local Safelite shop in Northern VA do my windshield 4 years ago, because they have a guy who does all their Porsche windshields. He's done hundreds of them. He came to my house and did it in my garage (with me assisting). He knew the tricks to get the glass in straight and the seal fit correctly (URO).

Even Porsche-only shops don't have that much experience. Of course you should ask specific questions in your locality, but at least in some locations, they are as good or better than anyone else.

FYI, the windshield installed at my house was $600. I think the windshield alone was about $350. I did not go with the OE Securit brand becuase I drive my car a lot and figure a windshield is a replacement item every 10 years or so, along with the gasket.
