Removing rear seat and parcel sound deadening question...

I am in the process of removing the old carpets from my 86 coupe. Also, am removing the rear interior sound deadening material as everything is, well, just old and needs refreshing/updated.

My question for those that have removed it and not reinstalled - how loud was it?

Stock exhaust, and will be putting in new carpets - just wondering if I leave it out how bearable or unbearable it will be?

I am in the process of swapping engines with my other 86 and don't have the luxury of putting things back together and driving to test. Plus we are getting ready to move across the country...

It sounds like, from other threads, the mechanical sounds are highlighted with the interior seat/parcel shelf deadening removed and I just wanted to verify.

I drive 100% with the windows down and don't mind engine/exhaust noise...just don't want it to be like standing behind an F-16 during takeoff

It's not that bad...I actually really like the sound of the engine. I don't miss it at all. My opinion based on a few years with it out on my 85 targa.

Great to hear. (...no pun intended?)

It sounds like most tear it out and either keep it out for weight savings or install more modern sound deadening material.

I am leaving it out and if it's too loud I can always install new/modern insulation.

Thanks a lot!

Reasons to put insulation back are noise and heat. It does get hotter and if you have ac you know it needs all the help it can get. I have a custom exhaust and find it bearable but a bit too loud for long drives. Other people like how it sounds outside. Like they say, YMMV. When I replace my carpet I will put sound deadening insulation back. I live in Florida so heat is an issue.

After reading different threads about stripping out everything and redoing interiors the heat issue was mentioned. I will be leaving TX and heading back to the Midwest so not sure the heat will be a problem.

I see a lot of threads that lightly mentioned the heat but most it seem aren't concerned and it is the 'sound deadening' they are more concerned about.

I did remove the AC from my 911's down here in south TX and am pretty acclimated to the heat.

I guess my concern would be if I was driving on an 85 degree day would the heat that transfers from the engine, with the insulation removed, be too much vs with the insulation left in place?

Thanks for the heads up on the heat...

Erik

I didn't notice an increase in heat.

Removed it, because it was simply too heavy. Never regretted

Looks great and clean. Think that's the plan for me also.

What a mess to remove...but, the end result will be worth it.

Thanks much appreciated!

Before you glue down new carpet take it for a long drive and see how you feel about the sound.

I think opinions are mixed - I've read of plenty of folks who have removed the sound deadening/insulation and regretted it.

I did lots of long drives (2-3 hours) in my old SC with the factory sound deadening in place and I recall arriving at my destination a bit fatigued from the noise.

In my '84 I added additional material (where it was lacking) to make it quieter. Everyone has a different acceptance level of sound/noise.

I think in the end this is what I will have to do. Had good comments here and some PM's and the results are very mixed.

I think leaving it out won't be too bad, but will not really know until I try both with and without.

Appreciate the comment!

he biggest sound insulation from engine noise is actually the foam pad that is above the engine in the engine compartment .. if yours is missing as many are I would add it back.

Have that installed but am ordering new. Yes, that is one pad I didn't want to delete.
