Any window regulator experts? Is there a difference per model?

So I have two 1986 911's in front of me.

Targa (low mileage 1 owner) was written off after an accident so am swapping the undamaged parts to the coupe (200,000 miles very used).

I have swapped the driver door and am using the targa door on the coupe and have made all the window and window frame changes and everything is great.

But....after reading and researching I found the two models have different regulators, supposedly.....SO, pulling the targa regulator noticed an odd part number per what is listed here at Pelican and with PET.

Also, as I learned, the window mountings are different (on the glass itself) so that raised a concern of how things would set in the rails with the 'wheels/rollers' of the regulator(s).


So after pulling both, which yes is a huge pain in the *ss I found these same part numbers on both:

911.542.003.43





So, researching it appears these are parts from the SC era???





So, I was about to order the latest window regulator and looking at photos of new (911.542.935.28) I do notice a difference in design - but it's the internet, and photo disclaimers show they aren't always correct...

But...having two in front of me that are fully functional and have been in my 20 years of ownership not sure it justifies $650 for something that is already working, just with the "not listed" part numbers.


By pure chance or luck was wondering if any owners of mid 80's 911's have noticed this in their rebuilding or dismantling - and if so, did you just keep the older part/regulator and move on...or order the latest part and call it a day?


Wanted others aware since this doesn't come up much...feel the right thing to do is order the newest part...but...kinda feels like "if it ain't broke-don't fix" moment...(plus I need new fuel lines...)


Again, just putting this out there and am curious if anyone has come across this?

I wouldn't be surprised that a 1986 built in January has different parts than an '86 built in December. These cars changed so little in ten years it's bound to happen that, depending on when the car was put together, you'll get different years with different parts within the same year.

Ya know, you hear the tales...the complaints, the "issues"...

You hear about the problems, the concerns, warnings to stay away...


Then you own one, take it down to nuts and bolts and see the most obscure parts and the numbers don't remotely match - and think "this is why I love this car"...

I just took apart two doors to find out neither had, by definition, the right parts installed...yet, it works near perfect. Then, laughing at myself, I reinstalled everything to step back and feel complete satisfaction. Porsche ownership...wow!?



Sigh...with a smile.
