Front torsion bar cover stuck

One came off by hand, other is stuck, from the looks of the off one, it's likely rusted on.

Options:

Apply propane heat and try to pry it off?
maybe take off the cross member and work on it the bench or then take to someone with a hotter torch. The torsion bar won't come out on the other control arm either.

Wanting to apply new control arm bushings is the reason for this issue.

Stuck Front Torsion Bar………

Mike,

If you are having problem pulling the front torsion bar from the control arm, remove the front disc or cover shown in the pictures below:

Use the front torsion bar (stuck) to push out the metal disc cover (see picture). It is just forced fit and put it back later. I used a 3-feet long steel rod to pop the metal disc out.

You can also drill/destroy it to get it out if you have to. You can replace them super inexpensively.

Thank you Tony, I took the center cross bar off the steering rank and managed to get the cap off.

However, the photos you provided show me how I might get the stuck torsion bars off!

Thanks! And = I'll ask more questions tomorrow if I cannot get the front cover off then I canuse a broom or some thing to un stick it.
Thanks again. and interesting adventure for me.

So I’m crystal clear in my thoughts, your saying I can pound away on the side in the photo to press out the disk at the front of the car?

And of course a brass drift and 5 lb hammer forced the disk out.
Good thing the link was provided as I already lost one somehow.

Nice!! One tip from when I did mine is I put the discs in the freezer, and they set right in and then when warmed up were seated firmly.

Do yourself a favor, go buy one of these it will save you time and time again in the garage. I don’t know what I would do without one. Whether it’s removing valve guides, torsion bars, ball joints or whatever.

Air hammer/chisel. It will take that torsion bar out in less than a minute.

Hi Ivan,

Thanks!

It would be easier with a hoist so I could stand up while doing it! But, the exercise of getting up and down is good for my old bones.

Yes, I think that is wise to measure angles, waiting on my kit from Elephant racing, I expect the instructions tell me the angles, but as you suggest, I still plan to measure the angles before I take off the mounts. Want to be sure I know how to setup, to measure the correct angles .

I used white paint on the torsion bar adjustment screw threads (prior to start of removal) so I could get the adjuster close to the right position (on install), also took photos of the thread position to in case the paint gets rubbed off.

Things I'm surprised with so far:

1.) the weight of the torsion bar (I guess the rear ones are even heavier)
2.) the disintegration of this
https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/90134147500.htm?pn=901-341-475-00-M136&fc=Y
3.) the rust on the bars (will be covering them with liberal amounts of wheel bearing grease) assuming I don't go for new hollow bars (I'll cover them too with grease)

Cheers Ivan

PS I have the vase my Dad received from Czechoslovakia at the end of WWII. It was an appreciation gift. I think of you and my late father both when I look at it. Good grief that vase is now 80 years old!

Oops,

My bad, it was really the rear cover which was initially stuck which caused the commotion. I had to take off the crossmember which attaches to the steering rack to get that cover off, could not budge it in situ. Drivers side yes (off in situ easy peasy), pass side no way! Anyway, once off the car, I could get enough leverage to get the adjustment cap off. Still got lots of good advice on how to get the torsion bars out and etc on the front dust caps.

Serendipity ...

Hi Ivan,

It's early here so I do not want to open the cabinet to wake anyone else. Here is a picture of the vase. I'll check for a maker's insignia later. It's blue, almost the same color as my 911.
