what is this goop by the brake lines at the tub?

The black "goop" (rock hard) seems to keep the fuel lines from motion. I'll need to remove the stuff to get at the grommets for the fuel line.
After fuel lines done should I replace the goop with something?

It’s just a sealant to insure no water intrusion.

I am about to embark on this job of replacing brake lines. Primarily because I can't get that brake line that is attached to the elbow in your above picture loose due to 48 years of crud and that black sealant.

Are you replacing all the lines?

Most likely will, plan to order them all from Len. Waiting to pull the engine (maybe) to do it. Not sure they need replacement, but the next owner might pay a wee bit more if I say all new lines (five or ten years ago )

The sealer is prolly something called dum dum. When it was new it came in strips like black licorice, about the diameter of a pencil, about 12" long. It was tar-like, but you worked it like clay and pushed it into any crevasse or hole or seal you wanted to waterproof. Fifty years on it dry's out and gets hard.

If this follows the same path as my typical car repair jobs, this will be a nightmare and I will never want to do it again.

This started off as simply replacing my master cylinder (which I have done before on this car and it was NOT FUN). I got the MC off in about 45 minutes, but in the process broke one of the brake lines. Looking at the condition of the rest of the lines (especially at this junction you show above) I decided it was probably best to do somewhat of a wholesale replacement. But...we'll see. I just want a functioning brake system again.

If anyone is a glutton for punishment, I wrote a funny article about the last time I replaced this MC for my PCA newsletter (circa 1996 or so). I will post it if there is interest.

1996, that's about when I replaced my ball joints give or take. It was not too bad. I've an itch for the 930 like brake kit from Elephant racing, so maybe your article would cure my itch. I've never replaced my master yet, fingers crossed at 120K miles. Cure my itch and save me 8 grand too!

FYI Here is a link to pics of my fuel lines

I think I would be thrilled to death with fuel lines that looked that good.
