1974 911 Tilt Steering Wheel
I'm knee deep into a major restoration of a car I've never driven...(not unusual for me)
I don't think I even sat in the driver's seat of a 911 recently and wonder if I should consider a tilt steering wheel, which I've done in other restorations. A tilt mechanism made a big difference in an Austin Healey and TR6. I'm thinking it might make a big difference in a 911. Is there a tilt mechanism available that anyone know about? Am I over-thinking this and a standard steering wheel height is fine? Appreciate and suggestions and opinions. |

No air-cooled 911 ever came with a tilt column, and I'm not sure what car you'd start with to try to fit one, if it even fit. How do you want to move the wheel? There isn't any room to move the column up, and if you move it down the wheel is going to hit your legs pretty quickly. If you want the wheel higher, your easiest bet is an eccentric spacer behind a Momo or other aftermarket wheel. This spacer raises it I think an inch or so.

Thanks Your questions are appropriate. I've never driven the car so I don't know what I would want to adjust. I was hoping someone might say the wheel was too far down and tight on the legs or similar. Just trying to be proactive.
I'll get the seats fitted in and see how it feels. |

Since you did it, I’m curiosu what you used in the Healey and TR6.
The stock steering wheel is quite close to the dash - if you were to tilt it up it would get even closer, to a degree that I think it would be a problem. I’m 6 feet tall and thin and have slightly short arms for my height, so every car I get in I want to pull the wheel closer to me so that I can get a good position on the wheel without scrunching my legs. To do this on my 911 I replaced the stock wheel with a slightly dished Momo on an extended hub and this did the trick. If you’re thin you’ll run into fewer issues with the wheel than if you’re a big guy. The eccentric hub spacer exists because steering wheels hitting legs is an issue for some people. I tend to like my wheels on the low side and I like the height in my car.

I run the Works Bell 103280 Rapfix GTC Tilt Hub on my Momo adapter hub. Makes getting in and out of a race seat much easier. This is your only option I'm aware of, and even then id say seat mounting position will be the most helpful modification if needed.
