'88 Coupe Side Rear Glass help please.

I have the rear side glass out on my 1988 3.2 Carrera Coupe and have a couple of questions.

Firstly underneath the lower aluminium trim that sits on the bodywork below the window (not the trim the sits in the rubber seal) I found some plastic washers. As far as I can tell these are only specified for fitment up to '77. My Porsche PET shows only the sealing tape underneath this trim. Now I know this window has been out in my ownership, but not by me.

Has anybody else done this job on a late Carrera - and can comment on whether they had these washers in place? I'd like to know what is 'correct' before I refit the window.

Secondly the glass itself had a layer of crusty hard grey sealant around its periphery. Should there be anything applied before I refit the window? I have the front door frames out as well and have replaced the butyl sealant bead around the front vent glass - should I do something similar on the rear glass? (My instinct says yes, but I'm wondering what was the factory approach here.)

Thanks

That window has been out before..... looks like some "dum-dum" putty was used by the previous installer. I can't think of why one would do that unless that is a known leak area. I can't tell from your pictures if that is a deteriorated seal or an excessive use of putty. As far as the washers, I did not have them on my 88 coupe.

Thank you!

Indeed the window has been out. What you see on the glass is not deterioration of the seal, it is something that has been applied to the glass. Whilst the seal that came wasn't totally unusable I am going to fit a new Porsche OE seal.

There is usually a strip of butyl tape (dumdum putty) on the fender where the trim molding gets screwed down.

Thanks - you can see that in my images. I have a roll of the correct tape to replace this.

On my '86, there were no plastic washers beneath the trim, just the tape.
There is nothing on the glass, just the rubber seal.

To replace the glass and seal/aluminum trim I used 14ga automotive electrical wire as a "cord", starting at the top of the vertical section, wrapping down around the periphery of the seal, overlapping the vertical section and finishing at the bottom. Worked well with me on the inside and a helper on the outside maintaining position and some pressure.

Never had leaks, the glass was removed as a precaution while working on something else.

Seems the guys that took out and re-fitted my window made a real hotch-potch of it. I'm going to use a thin bead of butyl rubber around the edge of the glass (as with the front 'vent' glass) though.
