New Rear Wheel, Still Has Some Play
Hi Guys,
I just replaced the drive's side rear wheel bearing because it had some play and squeled a bit after a hard run. I had replaced both with SKF bearings last summer. The car is a '75 911S. The removal and install went well. I torqued the axle nut down as far as I could with a three foot breaker bar and almost all of my weight (220#). I checked for play, and there is still enough to feel, maybe a mm or so. What's up with this? The nut was torqued to aroung 300 ft/lbs. Any advice John Walker or anyone else? By the way, the Sir Tool bearing remover/installer, as sold by PP, makes this job much easier. Thanks, Troy

the bearing can be moving in the trailing arm. ones that go in too easy have this problem. the flange that pulls into the bearing can also have wear, usually from running in a bad bearing for too long. it can fit tight in one side of the inner race, and loose in the other. that said, a tiny amount of play in the bearing magnifies to a much more noticable amount, the farther out you go.

Hey John,
Is it something to be concerned about? I am confident everything is installed correctly and the car drives fine with no noise from the wheel. What do you think? Thanks, Troy

as long as you've been in there and it's a fresh bearing, i wouldn't worry about it.
